Sinopse

In the heart of 19th-century America, where the shadow of slavery cast its darkness, there emerged a beacon of hope and resistance: the Underground Railroad. This clandestine network of safe houses, secret routes, and courageous individuals defied the laws of the land and risked their lives to help enslaved people escape to freedom.

Through a tapestry of personal narratives and historical accounts, this book tells the gripping story of the Underground Railroad. We follow the footsteps of Harriet Tubman, the fearless conductor who led hundreds of enslaved people to freedom, earning her the nickname "Moses of her people." We witness the unwavering determination of Frederick Douglass, who escaped slavery and became a powerful abolitionist and orator. We learn about the contributions of lesser-known heroes, such as William Still, the "Father of the Underground Railroad," who meticulously documented the journeys of those who escaped.

The Underground Railroad was not just a network of secret routes and safe houses; it was a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. It was a triumph of hope over despair, of unity over division, and of justice over oppression. Through the collective efforts of abolitionists, freedmen, and enslaved individuals, the Underground Railroad became a lifeline for those seeking refuge from the horrors of slavery.

This book delves into the intricate workings of the Underground Railroad, exploring the methods used to evade slave catchers, the challenges faced by those seeking freedom, and the sacrifices made by those who risked their lives to help them. It sheds light on the complex social and political landscape of the time, examining the forces that perpetuated slavery and the growing movement that sought to abolish it.

Ultimately, the Underground Railroad serves as a reminder of the indomitable spirit of those who fought for freedom and justice. Their stories inspire us to reflect on the ongoing struggle against oppression and injustice, and to work towards a world where equality and liberty prevail for all.

As the settler state of Canada expanded into Indigenous lands, settlers dispossessed Indigenous people and undermined their sovereignty as nations. One site of invasion was Kahnawà:ke, a Kanien’kehá:ka community and part of the Rotinonhsiónni confederacy. The Laws and the Land delineates the establishment of a settler colonial relationship from early contact ways of sharing land; land practices under Kahnawà:ke law; the establishment of modern Kahnawà:ke in the context of French imperial claims; intensifying colonial invasions under British rule; and ultimately the Canadian invasion in the guise of the Indian Act, private property, and coercive pressure to assimilate. What Daniel Rück describes is an invasion spearheaded by bureaucrats, Indian agents, politicians, surveyors, and entrepreneurs. This original, meticulously researched book is deeply connected to larger issues of human relations with environments, communal and individual ways of relating to land, legal pluralism, historical racism and inequality, and Indigenous resurgence.

The world's leading investigator of consciousness argues that by understanding what consciousness does—cause change in the world—we can understand its origins and its future

In Then I Am Myself the World, Christof Koch explores the only thing we directly experience: consciousness. At the book's heart is integrated-information theory, the idea that the essence of consciousness is the ability to exert causal power over itself, to be an agent of change. Koch investigates the physical origins of consciousness in the brain and how this knowledge can be used to measure consciousness in natural and artificial systems.

Enabled by such tools, Koch reveals when and where consciousness exists, and uses that knowledge to confront major social and scientific questions: When does a fetus first become self-aware? Can psychedelic and mystical experiences transform lives? What happens to consciousness in near-death experiences? Why will generative AI ultimately be able to do the very thing we can do, yet never feel any of it? And do our experiences reveal a single, objective reality?

This is an essential book for anyone who seeks to understand ourselves and the future we are creating.
