Sinopsis

In the heart of Napa Valley, nestled amidst rolling hills and sun-drenched vineyards, lies Inglenook Estate, a winery steeped in history, passion, and the enduring legacy of winemaking excellence. From its humble beginnings as Gustave Niebaum's Inglenook Vineyard in the late 19th century, to its revival under the visionary leadership of Francis Ford Coppola, Inglenook has played a pivotal role in shaping the history and reputation of California wine.

This captivating book tells the story of Inglenook Estate, a tale of perseverance, innovation, and the enduring power of place. Through the eyes of winemaker, vintner, and visionary, we discover the secrets behind Inglenook's extraordinary wines, and the passion that drives the people who create them.

We explore the unique terroir that gives Inglenook wines their distinctive character, and the meticulous care and attention to detail that goes into every bottle. We delve into the art of blending, where the winemaker's skill and experience come together to create harmonious and complex flavors.

Beyond the walls of the winery, we venture into the heart of the Napa Valley community. We meet the people whose lives are intertwined with Inglenook, from the grape growers and vineyard workers to the restaurateurs and sommeliers who share Inglenook's wines with the world. We explore the region's rich history and culture, and discover the many ways in which Inglenook is deeply connected to the fabric of the community.

More than just a winery, Inglenook is a symbol of California's winemaking heritage and a testament to the enduring spirit of innovation and excellence. From the first sip to the last, Inglenook's wines tell a story of passion, perseverance, and the enduring power of place. This book is an invitation to raise a glass to Inglenook, and to celebrate the legacy of a great winery that continues to inspire and enchant wine lovers around the world.

Key to the City - How Zoning...

In Key to the City, legal scholar and architect Sara C. Bronin examines how zoning became such a prevailing force and reveals its impact—and its potential for good. Outdated zoning codes have maintained racial segregation, prioritized cars over people, and enabled great ecological harm. But, as Bronin argues, once we recognize the power of zoning, we can harness it to create the communities we desire, and deserve. Drawing on her own experience leading the overhaul of Hartford's zoning code and exploring the efforts of activists and city planners across the country, Bronin shows how new codes are reshaping our cities—from Baltimore to Chicago, Las Vegas to Minneapolis, and beyond. In Boston, a law fought for by a passionate group of organizers, farmers, and beekeepers is transforming the city into a haven for urban farming. In Tucson, zoning codes are mitigating the impacts of climate change and drought-proofing neighborhoods in peril. In Delray Beach, Florida, a new code aims to capture and maintain the town's colorful spirit through its architecture.

With clarity and insight, Bronin demystifies the power of an inscrutable organizing force in our lives and invites us to see zoning as a revolutionary vehicle for change. In Key to the City, she puts forward a practical and energizing vision for how we can reimagine our communities.

    Ancient Spartan and Roman...

There have been no shortage of great warrior societies in history, including the Romans, Mongols, Macedonians, and Vikings, the list goes on. Yet one humble city in particular, nestled in a valley near the Eurotas river in the Greek region of the Peloponnese and once ridiculed as little more than a cluster of villages inhabited by uncouth shepherds, produced the most famous warrior elite the world has ever known.
The most unique city-state in Ancient Greece was Sparta, which continues to fascinate contemporaneous society. It is not entirely clear why Sparta placed such a great emphasis on having a militaristic society, but the result was that military fitness was a preoccupation from birth. If a Spartan baby did not appear physically fit at birth, it was left to die. Spartan children underwent military training around the age of 7 years old, and every male had to join the army around the age of 18. Athens might have the mightiest fleet and the greatest cadre of philosophers and dramatists, Thessaly might have had the most vaunted cavalry, and the great city-states of Argos, Thebes and Corinth all had their own claims to fame, but on the battlefield the Spartan phalanx stood without peer.
The Roman army is one of the most famous fighting forces in history. Through its power and prowess, a once obscure Italian city forged an empire that encircled the Mediterranean and covered half of Europe. The physical remains of its presence can be traced from the mountainous borders of Scotland to the arid deserts of Egypt, but its legacy is far greater and more enduring, as Rome's influence continues to shape the political, legal, and cultural landscape of Europe to this very day. While the Roman army is rightly famed as an institution, the image of the individual legionary is also an iconic one. The uniformed, disciplined soldier is one of the first things many people imagine when they think of Rome.

Defending My Enemy - Skokie and...

A new edition of the most important free speech book of the past half-century, with a new chapter by the author on some of the top First Amendment controversies of today
When Nazis wanted to express their right to free speech in 1977 by marching through Skokie, Illinois—a town with a large population of Holocaust survivors—Aryeh Neier, then the national executive director of the ACLU and himself a Holocaust survivor, came to the Nazis' defense. Explaining what many saw as a despicable bridge too far for the First Amendment, Neier spelled out his thoughts about free speech in his 1979 book Defending My Enemy.

Nearly fifty years later, Neier revisits the topic of free speech in a volume that includes his original essay along with a new chapter addressing present-day First Amendment battles, including the Charlottesville march, book bans, the heckler's veto, attacks on free speech on college campuses, and the threat to overturn the US Supreme Court decision in The New York Times v. Sullivan. Including a foreword by Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and an afterword by longtime free speech champion Nadine Strossen, Defending My Enemy offers razor-sharp analysis from the man Jameel Jaffer of the Knight First Amendment Institute describes as "an icon of justice and fearlessness."
