Sinopse

In the annals of lost civilizations, none captivates the imagination quite like Terra Oceanica, the vanished people of the sea. A fabled land shrouded in mystery, Terra Oceanica is believed to have been a technologically advanced and spiritually enlightened civilization that once thrived in the depths of the ocean.

This book embarks on an enthralling journey to uncover the truth behind this legendary civilization. Through a comprehensive exploration of ancient texts, historical accounts, geological evidence, and archaeological discoveries, we piece together the fragments of Terra Oceanica's history, culture, and ultimate fate.

Our quest takes us to the heart of this once-great empire, where we unravel the remnants of their advanced technologies and decipher ancient symbols that hint at their profound understanding of astronomy, mathematics, and energy. We marvel at the remnants of their magnificent architecture, revealing their mastery of construction and engineering.

But Terra Oceanica's story is not just about its technological prowess; it is also a tale of spirituality, divinity, and the human condition. We delve into the beliefs and practices of the Atlanteans, exploring their reverence for the sea, their connection to the cosmos, and their search for enlightenment. We unravel the mysteries surrounding their divine rulers, their moral codes, and the spiritual forces that guided their lives.

We also examine the factors that led to Terra Oceanica's downfall, including natural disasters, internal conflicts, and the hubris of their leaders. We reflect on the lessons that can be learned from their triumphs and failures, considering the fragility of power, the importance of environmental stewardship, and the enduring legacy of human ingenuity.

Join us on this captivating voyage through time as we uncover the secrets of Terra Oceanica, a civilization that continues to inspire and intrigue to this day. Discover the truth behind the legend and explore the enduring legacy of a people who once ruled the waves.

The conquest of Constantinople in 1453 by a besieging army of around 80,000 men led by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II ended the Byzantine Empire. The city's defense was in the hands of Emperor Constantine XI, who had 7,000 to 10,000 soldiers at his disposal and, likely, fell during the last storm on the city. The fall of the Byzantine Empire also marked the final rise of the Ottoman Empire to become a major power. The conquest has a high symbolic value in both Turkish and Western European reception; Depending on one's perspective, it is viewed as evidence of imperial greatness or as a beacon of decay and demise. In historiography, the conquest of Constantinople is sometimes cited as one of the events that marked the transition from medieval Europe to modern times.

While doing fieldwork on the remote Indonesian island of Flores, anthropologist Gregory Forth came across people talking about half-apelike, half-humanlike creatures that once lived in a cave on the slopes of a nearby volcano. Over the years he continued to record what locals had to say about these mystery hominoids while searching for ways to explain them as imaginary symbols of the wild or other cultural representations.

In Between Ape and Human, we follow Forth on the trail of this mystery hominoid, and the space they occupy in islanders' culture as both natural creatures and as supernatural beings. In a narrative filled with adventure, Lio culture and language, zoology and natural history, Forth comes to a startling and controversial conclusion.

Unique, important, and thought-provoking, this book will appeal to anyone interested in human evolution, the survival of species (including our own), and how humans might relate to 'not-quite-human' animals. A must-listen for all those interested in cryptozoology, it is the only firsthand investigation by a leading anthropologist into the possible survival of a primitive species of human into recent times—and its coexistence with modern humans.

Europe without Borders - A History

Europe is a place of free movement among nations—or is it? The Schengen area, established in 1985 and today encompassing twenty-nine European countries, allows people, goods, and capital to cross borders without restraint. Schengen transformed European life, advancing both a democratic project of transnational citizenship and a neoliberal project of international free trade. But the right of free movement always excluded non-Europeans, especially migrants of color from former colonies of the Schengen states. In Europe without Borders, Isaac Stanley-Becker explores the contested creation of free movement in Schengen.

Schengen laid the groundwork for the making of a single market and the founding of the European Union. Yet its emergence is one of the great untold stories of modern European history, one hidden in archives long embargoed. Stanley-Becker is among the first to have access to records of the treatymaking and Europe without Borders offers a pathbreaking account of Schengen's creation. Stanley-Becker argues that Schengen gave a humanist cast to a market paradigm; but even in pairing the border crossing of human beings with the principles of free-market exchange, this vision of free movement was hedged by alarm about foreign migrants. Meanwhile, these migrants—the sans-papiers—saw in the promise of a borderless Europe only a neocolonial enterprise.
