What if the key to optimal health isn't to avoid stress, but to harness it to make you better? Like the Greek hero Hercules at his crossroads, we face a choice: The easy path of the couch, social media, binge streaming and fast food, which leads to decline. Or the more challenging path of purposeful hardiness that builds true strength. The Hardiness Effect offers a revolutionary approach that goes beyond resilience, showing you how to harness your mind and body for a life well lived.

Dr Paul Taylor, psychophysiologist, ex-military aviator and award-winning author, reveals the practical actions that will help you move from coping to adapting. Combining ancient wisdom with cutting-edge research in exercise, nutrition, neuroscience and psychology, The Hardiness Effect will transform how you think about life. If, like Hercules, you choose to follow the harder path, you’ll find you can face life’s challenges with new determination, boost your physical and mental health, and even extend your longevity.

Master the four pillars of psychological hardiness: Discover the 4 Cs (challenge, control, commitment and connection), a framework that turns adversity into growth.

Harness hormesis to live longer and healthier: Apply the biological principle that small doses of stress make you stronger, with proven, step-by-step practices that trigger your body’s repair and anti-aging systems.

Tune your daily rhythms for peak performance: Learn how to supercharge your brain and energy through sleep hygiene, light exposure, breath work, omega-3 and Vitamin D, recovery protocols and more.

Escape the comfort trap: Take back control from ultraprocessed foods, sedentary living and addictive technologies — and develop habits that create hardiness and boost wellbeing.

The Hardiness Effect shows you how to unlock your potential by building the psychological and physical toughness you need for lasting health and vitality. This science-backed, hands-on blueprint will show you how to transform challenge into strength and embrace a life of genuine purpose and fulfilment.

From the “Trail of Tears” to Wounded Knee and Little Bighorn, the narrative of American history is incomplete without the inclusion of the Native Americans that lived on the continent before European settlers arrived in the 16th and 17th centuries. Since the first contact between natives and settlers, tribes like the Sioux, Cherokee, and Navajo have both fascinated and perplexed outsiders with their history, language, and culture.
The history of the Sioux is replete with constant reminders of the consequences of both their accommodation of and resistance to American incursions into their territory by pioneering white settlers pushing further westward during the 19th century. Some Sioux leaders and their bands resisted incoming whites, while others tried to accommodate them, but the choice often had little impact on the ultimate outcome. Crazy Horse, who was never defeated in battle by U.S. troops, surrendered to them in 1877, only to be bayoneted to death by soldiers attempting to imprison him. Black Kettle, who flew a large American flag from his lodge to indicate his friendship with the white man, was shot to death by soldiers under George Custer’s command in 1868. Throughout the 19th century, the U.S. government and its officials in the West adopted a policy of dividing the Sioux into two groups: “Treaty Indians” and “Non-treaty Indians.” Often they used these groups against each other or used one group to influence another, but the end was always the same. They were forced off the land where they resided, their populations were decimated by disease, and they were forced onto reservations.
Despite being one of the most erstwhile foes the U.S. government faced during the Indian Wars, the Sioux and their most famous leaders were grudgingly admired and eventually immortalized by the very people they fought. Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse remain household names due to their leadership of the Sioux at the fateful Battle of the Little Bighorn.

A Vietnam veteran recounts his experience through two tours of duty—early in the conflict and then in its final stages. Fresh out of West Point, John Howard arrived for his first tour in Vietnam in 1965, the first full year of escalation when U.S. troop levels increased dramatically, from 23,000 to 184,000. When Howard returned for a second tour in 1972, troop strength stood at 24,000 and would dwindle to a mere fifty the following year. He thus participated in the very early and very late stages of American military involvement in the Vietnam War.   Howard’s two tours—the first as a platoon commander and member of an elite counterguerrilla force, and the second as a senior advisor to the South Vietnamese—provide a fascinating lens through which to view not only one soldier’s experience in Vietnam, but also the country’s.
