Sinopsis

In a world awash with information and endless possibilities, it's easy to overlook the profound significance of our everyday lives. This book invites you on a journey to explore the hidden depths of the mundane, revealing the extraordinary within the ordinary.

Through the lens of sociology, cultural studies, and philosophy, we delve into the intricate web of daily rhythms, routines, and practices that shape our experiences and interactions with the world around us. From the comfort of our homes to the bustling streets of urban centers, we navigate a multitude of spaces that influence our daily lives. The places we inhabit, both physical and virtual, become extensions of ourselves, reflecting our values, aspirations, and relationships.

The practices we engage in, from the mundane to the meaningful, shape our daily rhythms. Whether it's the morning commute, the preparation of meals, or the interactions with family and friends, these routines provide structure and order to our lives. They also reveal our values, priorities, and aspirations. The way we spend our time, the choices we make, and the habits we form all contribute to the unique tapestry of our daily existence.

Consumption, in its various forms, plays a significant role in our everyday lives. From the necessities we purchase to the luxuries we indulge in, our consumption patterns shape our identities, our relationships, and our impact on the environment. Advertising, with its persuasive messages and alluring imagery, influences our desires and shapes our perceptions of what we need and what we want.

The media we consume, from traditional sources like newspapers and television to the vast expanse of the internet, shapes our understanding of the world and our place in it. The stories we read, the images we see, and the information we absorb all contribute to our mental landscape and influence our attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.

Bill Wilson was a washed up Wall Street analyst after the Great Crash of 1929 who was dying of alcoholism and decided to clean up. He read “Varieties off Religious Experience” by eminent Harvard Professor William James (whose own brother had died of alcoholism). The rest, as they say, is history and the result was what Aldous Huxley called the most Important social movement of the 20th century. This book weaves together brief excerpts from James’ book (which had radical ideas about spirituality being an end to itself and mostly separate from religion) with the writings of Bill Wilson to show how the two men’s thinking interacted to create the 12 Step movement. It sheds light on the profound influence James had on early 20th Century Agnosticism. It is solid analysis of James’ important contribution to American Spiritualism. Most of all, though, it is a reflection on the 12 Steps of AA & a meditation on what ‘Higher Power’ means. It is a soothing hot soak in the great writing of two men who developed a way out of the soul sickness that is addiction. They both saw spirituality as separate from religion which arises from the basic human need for some private higher power during moments of self-despair. The relief that comes makes life larger, allows us (finally) to belong and offers dignity — for alcoholics or those who live with alcoholics. It works. It really does. Read a sentence or a page per day. This book is a journey of reflection and meditation.

LIFE. SEX. RACE. POWER. FREE SPEECH. PROTEST. PRIVACY. DEMOCRACY. SOVEREIGNTY. DEATH.
Society shapes law… and law shapes society.
We like to imagine that progress comes about when Parliament spots a looming groundswell in public opinion and responds by changing the laws that govern our daily lives. This is not always true.
In this fascinating book, Inigo Bing unravels ten legal cases in which the decisions of judges or a jury either heralded a shift in outlook or forced Parliament to respond to simmering social change.
Some of these cases demonstrate the role judges have in defending our civil liberties against overweening executive power, articulating inherent unwritten rights Parliament would prefer to keep quiet about. Others explore what happens when rapid technological or social change outpaces government, placing urgent ethical dilemmas in the lap of the court. All of them have had a lasting impact on the society we inhabit.
Taken together, these stories provide a powerful insight into eighty years of British social, political and cultural history, illustrating why legal cases are just as important to making our world as laws written by Parliament or grassroots changes within society.

"He was the richest jeweller in England; but his mind was not on his jewels."

Oliver Bacon has climbed from the gutters of London to the pinnacle of luxury. He is the most powerful jeweller in the world, yet he is haunted by a relentless hunger for something money cannot buy: acceptance into the upper echelons of the aristocracy. When the Duchess of Lambourne arrives at his shop with a desperate secret and a string of questionable pearls, a high-stakes psychological game begins—one where the currency is not just gold, but blood, reputation, and the past.

A Masterclass in Modernist Tension: Virginia Woolf uses her signature psychological insight to peel back the layers of her characters' motivations. Oliver is a man of "checks and balances," constantly weighing his humble origins against his present grandeur. The Duchess is a woman of fading glory, willing to trade her family's legacy for the sake of her gambling debts. Their encounter is a clinical study of how the "new money" of the merchant class collides with the "old status" of a crumbling nobility.

The Glittering Surface of Corruption: Through vivid imagery—from the "shining fish" of the jewels to the "rotting meat" of the Duchess's lies—Woolf explores the rot beneath the polished surface of Mayfair society. The Duchess and the Jeweller is a biting, satirical look at a world where everything is for sale, and the ultimate transaction is the soul itself. It remains one of Woolf's most accessible and provocative explorations of greed and the vanity of human wishes.
