Sinopsis

From the Roaring Twenties to the present day, fashion has been a powerful form of self-expression and a reflection of the times we live in. It can tell stories about our culture, our values, and our aspirations. It can also be a source of great joy and beauty.

In this book, we take a journey through the history of fashion, exploring the work of iconic designers, the must-have fashion items of each decade, and the role that fashion plays in popular culture and our everyday lives.

We also examine the relationship between fashion and identity, sustainability, technology, and the future. We ask questions about the environmental impact of fashion, the ethics of fashion production, and the role that technology is playing in shaping the future of fashion.

Through this journey, we gain a deeper understanding of fashion and its significance in our lives. We learn how fashion can be used to express ourselves, to connect with others, and to make a difference in the world.

This book is a must-have for anyone who loves fashion, history, or culture. It is also a valuable resource for students, researchers, and anyone who wants to learn more about the world of fashion.

Join us on this journey through the world of fashion! Let us explore the stories that fashion tells, the beauty that it creates, and the power that it holds.

A showcase of Britain's most architecturally significant sports and leisure buildings from the twentieth century and beyond.
100 20th Century Sports and Leisure Buildings gives a fascinating insight into the spaces where we play: from swimming pools and skate parks to ice rinks and cricket pavilions. These structures are not only an intensely evocative part of our shared social heritage but some of the most architecturally innovative constructions of the past century – as seen here in buildings by architects including Edwin Lutyens, Walter Tapper, John Burnet and Zaha Hadid.
The twentieth century saw a rapid expansion in the public provision for sports and leisure as workers won the right to paid holiday, prompting a boom in the construction of municipal lidos, pools and sports grounds. Later in the century leisure centres brought together facilities for a whole range of sports with an emphasis on family fun, combining environmentally controlled environments with soaring engineering and playful pop imagery. Space-age geodesic domes, diamond-glazed pyramids, castellated forts, brutalist elephants and Moorish postmodern palaces are just a few of the highlights of this idiosyncratic genre showcased here.
Expert essays on particular building types, including Alan Powers on lidos and Simon Inglis on sports stadiums, give further context to these spaces. Also included is an introduction with a strong campaigning element – with the decimation of local authority budgets forcing the closure of many centres and pools, this is a timely exploration that provides a crucial record of this key part of our cultural heritage.

These essays are for the devotees of the Lord, for my spiritual master and His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami.
According to the Vedic tradition a word which does not glorify the Absolute Truth is like a place of pilgrimage for crows, but words that describe the glories of the unlimited Lord are praiseworthy, even though imperfectly composed.
I have to admit my struggles in this human form of life, but by the mercy of the Vaishnavas, Guru & Gauranga, I could taste a little nectar of spiritual life. For the pleasure of the parampara, I am writing my realisations, to please thee.
“By writing according to our realization we become more and more convinced and all doubts are destroyed.”
    (Letter to Pusta Kṛṣṇa)
Over the last ten years writing about traveling to holy places and experiencing an inner revolution of the heart by associating with saintly persons, writing helped to shape and support this inner transformation.
“May Krishna bless you to improve more and more in writing the glories of our previous acaryas and the Lord. Be engaged in glorifying the parampara system and your life will be glorified automatically thousands of times.” (Letter to Acyutananda)
For the pleasure of my Guru I'd like to address difficult topics concerning the chanting of the Holy Name of the Lord, controlling the mind & senses, as well as spreading this matchless gift of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness, to help the coming generations to learn from mistakes and challenges.

    Pop Song Piracy - Disobedient...

The music industry’s ongoing battle against digital piracy is just the latest skirmish in a long conflict over who has the right to distribute music. Starting with music publishers’ efforts to stamp out bootleg compilations of lyric sheets in 1929, Barry Kernfeld’s Pop Song Piracy details nearly a century of disobedient music distribution from song sheets to MP3s.

In the 1940s and ’50s, Kernfeld reveals, song sheets were succeeded by fake books, unofficial volumes of melodies and lyrics for popular songs that were a key tool for musicians. Music publishers attempted to wipe out fake books, but after their efforts proved unsuccessful they published their own. Pop Song Piracy shows that this pattern of disobedience, prohibition, and assimilation recurred in each conflict over unauthorized music distribution, from European pirate radio stations to bootlegged live shows. Beneath this pattern, Kernfeld argues, there exists a complex give and take between distribution methods that merely copy existing songs (such as counterfeit CDs) and ones that transform songs into new products (such as file sharing). Ultimately, he contends, it was the music industry’s persistent lagging behind in creating innovative products that led to the very piracy it sought to eliminate.
