Synopsis

In this thought-provoking and insightful book, we embark on a journey of self-discovery, exploring the enigmatic nature of the self and the factors that shape our identity. Drawing inspiration from philosophy, psychology, religion, and personal experience, we delve into the depths of human consciousness to uncover the mysteries that lie within.

We begin by examining the role of memory in shaping our sense of self. How do our memories define who we are? How does the fallibility of memory impact our perception of the past and our sense of identity? We also explore the relationship between the body and the self, considering how our physical appearance, our physical actions, and our physical sensations influence our sense of self.

Next, we turn our attention to the social self, investigating the ways in which our interactions with others shape our identity. We examine the concept of the performative self, the role we play in social interactions, and the challenges of maintaining our sense of self in difficult relationships. We also explore the concept of the spiritual self, considering the role of spirituality in finding meaning and purpose in life and the relationship between the spiritual self and the physical and social selves.

As we continue our journey, we explore the concept of the evolving self, examining how our experiences transform us over time. We consider the challenges of change, the opportunities for growth, and the importance of self-reflection in understanding and accepting ourselves. We also delve into the concept of the fragmented self, considering the causes and consequences of a fragmented sense of self and the process of healing and integration.

Finally, we turn our attention to the future of the self, considering the impact of technology, artificial intelligence, and the changing nature of work on our sense of self. We also explore the challenges and opportunities of living in a globalized world and the search for meaning and purpose in a rapidly changing world.

Throughout this exploration, we offer insights and practical tools to help readers on their own journey of self-discovery. We encourage readers to embrace the challenges and opportunities of this journey, to question their beliefs and assumptions, and to open their minds and hearts to the possibilities that lie ahead.

Learn from five remarkable professors in this set of One Day University presentations on African American History. The term African American generally denotes descendants of enslaved Africans who are from the United States, and constitute the second largest racial group in the US. African-American history began in the 16th century, with Africans being sold to European slave traders and transported across the Atlantic to the Thirteen Colonies. During Reconstruction, they gained citizenship and the right to vote, but due to White supremacy, they were largely treated as second-class citizens and found themselves soon disenfranchised in the South. These circumstances only slowly changed due to participation in the military conflicts of the United States, substantial migration out of the South, the elimination of legal racial segregation, and the civil rights movement which sought political and social freedom.

Although Teotihuacan reached the height of its power and influence about 1500 years ago, the city is still an endless topic of fascination and debate, in addition to being Mexico’s most toured archaeological site. The origins of the city remain mysterious (as do the city’s founders), and scholars are still coming up with theories to explain the city’s demise. All the while, later Mesoamerican civilizations remembered Teotihuacan, and the Aztec even considered the city’s ruins a site of worship.
Cholula is one of the most interesting, enigmatic, and forgotten cities in ancient Mesoamerica, and few people are aware that it is the oldest continuously-occupied settlement in the entire Western hemisphere. The current city is known for the Great Pyramid, which has the largest base of all pyramids in the world, as well as its many colonial churches and constant religious celebrations. All of these things ensure that Cholula is heavily visited, but the tremendous importance of Prehispanic Cholula has mostly been lost in the historical accounts of Puebla and even Mexico as a whole.
During the height of Teotihuacan’s influence in the Classic period and the expansion of the Aztecs in the Postclassic, Cholula managed to maintain its independence and grew to become the greatest religious center in central Mesoamerica. As the main site for the cult of the god Quetzalcoatl, Cholula received pilgrims from many Prehispanic cities, and the two high priests of the Temple of Quetzalcoatl were charged with confirming the legitimacy of these foreign rulers, making their role one of the most important in the region. Most sources note that Cholula was a great religious center with a large pyramid, and that it was the site of a terrible massacre perpetrated by the Spanish, but other than that those details, the impressive city remains mostly unknown.

In "Searching for Harry Chapin’s America: Remember When the Music," journalist Pat Fenton describes his road trips to the towns and people that inspired Harry Chapin’s most renowned songs. While Fenton’s account includes exclusive interviews with Chapin’s family and associates, and an excerpt from Chapin’s unpublished writings, the audio adaptation includes actual cuts from Chapin's best-known songs. Composer and multi-instrumentalist David Amram, who narrates Fenton's chronicle, performs his own brief interludes of "incidental music," where he was inspired to do so.Harry Chapin (1942-1981) was a legendary top-charting American songwriter in the 1970s and ’80s. During his lifetime, Chapin was nominated twice for a Grammy Award: in 1972 for Best New Artist, and in 1974 for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance. In 2011, thirty years after his untimely death, Chapin’s Number One-charting song, “Cat’s In the Cradle,” was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. "Searching for Harry Chapin’s America" was published on July 16, 2021, and is a fortieth-year commemoration of this musical icon’s tragic death in a car crash on July 16, 1981. The audio adaptation follows a year later, in July, 2022, and extends the tribute to Chapin's legacy of songs and philanthropy."Like 'Don Quixote,' or 'On the Road,' Pat Fenton’s classic book takes you on an unforgettable series of journeys and makes you feel that you are now welcome to be with the people and places that Harry Chapin memorialized in his timeless songs."—David Amram, composer/multi-instrumentalist/author “A portrait of an age as well as an artist. Chapin was an American original who combined Walt Whitman’s lyric realism with Woody Guthrie’s passionate truth-telling. Fenton’s blend of sympathy, honesty, and insight gives us the man in full. Fenton’s talents as a master storyteller have never been on better display.” —Peter Quinn, novelist/political historian
