  The 2016 election of Donald Trump focused people's minds on populism, and most of the attention paid to the subject since has been on the threat it poses to wealthy democracies. In Democracy Unmoored, Samuel Issacharoff takes a far wider-angle view of the phenomenon, covering countries from across the globe: Brazil, Poland, Argentina, Turkey, India, Hungary, Venezuela, and more. Just as importantly, he focuses on populism's attack on the institutions of governance. Democracy requires two critical features: first, a commitment to repeat play such that political actors understand that what goes around comes around; and, second, institutional constraints so that the majority can prevail, albeit not by too much. Democracies must avoid the doomsday scenario in which the contending parties see the next election as the final choice between salvation and perdition. Issacharoff shows how populist governance undermines each of these two critical underpinnings of stable democracy, first by compressing the time horizon to the immediate, and second by eroding institutional constraints on strongman rule. At the same time, Issacharoff highlights the fact that ascendent populists were pushing in an open door as they found democracies in states of disrepair in the post-2008 world.

  The fall of the Roman Republic in the late first century BCE paved the way for a new era, one defined by the leadership of a single man: Augustus. Born Gaius Octavius, he emerged as the heir of Julius Caesar and transformed Rome from a state of political turmoil into a stable empire. His rise to power was marked by strategic alliances, military victories, and significant political reforms that laid the foundation for imperial rule. 
  The aftermath of the Republic’s collapse saw Rome in chaos. The assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BCE triggered a power struggle between his supporters and those who sought to restore the old Republic. Octavian, as he was then known, capitalized on his status as Caesar’s adopted son and formed the Second Triumvirate with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus. Together, they pursued and defeated Caesar’s assassins, Brutus and Cassius, at the Battle of Philippi in 42 BCE. However, tensions among the triumvirs soon escalated. Lepidus was forced into retirement, and Octavian turned against Antony, who had allied himself with Cleopatra of Egypt. Their rivalry culminated in the Battle of Actium in 31 BCE, where Octavian’s naval forces decisively defeated Antony and Cleopatra, leading to their eventual suicides. With no remaining challengers, Octavian stood as the unopposed ruler of Rome. 
  Rather than seizing power as a dictator, Octavian carefully crafted his authority to appear as a restoration of Republican values. In 27 BCE, he formally returned power to the Senate, a move that won him widespread support and the honorary title "Augustus." However, this gesture was largely symbolic, as he retained control over the military and key provinces. His governance established the principate, a system in which the emperor ruled under the guise of republican traditions while holding ultimate authority.

  How the policies of elite colleges allow racially themed parties to continue by perpetuating the status quo. On a cold February evening, a group of students at Bowdoin College, an elite and historically white liberal arts college in Maine, gathered to drink tequila at a party referred to as “not not a fiesta.” By noon the next day, Instagram videos of students sporting miniature sombreros had spread like wildfire through campus. Over the next few weeks, national media outlets would broadcast the embarrassing fallout. But the frequency with which similar parties recur on campuses across the United States begs the question: what, if anything, do undergraduates learn about race and racism from these encounters?
   
  Drawing on interviews and archival research, Yet Another Costume Party Debacle shows us how colleges both contest and reproduce racialized systems of power. Sociologist Ingrid A. Nelson juxtaposes how students and administrators discuss race with how they behave in the aftermath of racially charged campus controversies. Nelson spoke in-depth with students and other key players in several controversial parties—“Cracksgiving,” a “gangster party,” and the “not not a fiesta” tequila party—at Bowdoin. The college’s administrative response failed to encourage productive dialogue or address larger questions about race on campus. Nelson shows how the underlying campus structures at elite liberal arts colleges foster an environment that is ripe for racially charged incidents; we shouldn’t be surprised when we read about yet another costume party debacle. Nelson advises how we can take charge of diversity on our campuses by changing the systems that bring students together and drive them apart.
