Summary

For centuries, the world has been captivated by the works of William Shakespeare, the Bard of Avon. His plays and poems have enthralled audiences with their timeless themes, unforgettable characters, and exquisite language. But behind the brilliance of Shakespeare's work lies a lingering mystery: who was the true author?

This book delves into the depths of the Shakespeare authorship debate, exploring the evidence and arguments for and against the traditional view that the works were written by the historical figure William Shakespeare from Stratford-upon-Avon. We examine the life and career of Shakespeare, the historical and cultural context of his time, and the textual evidence found in his works.

We also consider the various alternative authorship theories, including those that attribute the works to Christopher Marlowe, Francis Bacon, Edward de Vere, and others. We weigh the evidence, consider the arguments, and ultimately come to our own conclusions about the true identity of the Bard of Avon.

This book is not merely an academic exercise. It raises fundamental questions about the nature of authorship, the role of evidence in historical research, and the relationship between art and biography. By exploring these questions, we can gain a deeper understanding of Shakespeare's work and its enduring significance.

Whether you are a seasoned Shakespeare scholar or a newcomer to the authorship debate, this book will provide you with a comprehensive overview of the evidence and arguments surrounding this enduring mystery. Join us as we explore the hidden corners of Shakespeare's life and work, and uncover the secrets that have been buried for centuries.

In addition to the authorship debate, this book also explores the cultural and historical significance of Shakespeare's work. We examine how Shakespeare's plays and poems have shaped Western literature, theater, and popular culture, and how they continue to resonate with audiences around the world.

This book is a must-read for anyone interested in Shakespeare, literature, history, or the enduring power of storytelling.

Linear and progressive views of history have dominated the popular imagination for the past seventy years in a worldview wedded to the inexorable rise of globalisation and GDP-growth at any cost. However, the end of the Cold War failed to produce the end of history as hoped, a fact brought home to many by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Material wealth and 'Progress' in the name of 'social justice' have not made people happier or more united but quite the opposite. Anxiety, depression, fearfulness, sadness, loneliness and anger have all massively increased since 1970 with the male suicide rate at an all-time high. Western society seems to be divided against itself across every line conceivable: left versus right, women versus men, 'non-whites' versus 'whites', globalists versus populists, 'the elites' versus 'the people', people who think that men can be women and vice versa versus those who insist that they cannot, and so on. Seventy-three percent of Americans believe their country is on 'the wrong track', with similar views reflected in Britain and across Europe. The Prophets of Doom explores eleven thinkers who not only dared to contradict the dominant linear and progressive view of history, but also predicted many of the political and social maladies through which we are living.

This sweeping history reorients our understanding of the Middle East, placing the Gulf at the heart of globalized trade and cross-cultural encounters.

World history began in the Persian Gulf. The ancient port cities that dotted its coastlines created the first global seaboard, a place from where faiths and cultures from around the world set sail and made contact. More than a history, The Center of the World shows us that contradictions that define our modern age have always been present.

For over four thousand years, the Gulf—sometimes called the Persian Gulf, sometimes the Arabian Gulf—has been a global crossroads while managing to avoid control by the world's greatest empires. In its history, we see a world of rapid change, fluctuating centers of trade, a dependency on uncertain global markets, and intense cross-cultural encounters that hold a mirror to the contemporary world. Focusing each chapter on a different port around the Gulf, The Center of the World shows how the people of the Gulf adapted to larger changes in world history, creating a system of free trade, merchant rule, and commerce that continues to define the region today.

The Han Dynasty, lasting from 206 BCE to 220 CE, is one of the most significant periods in Chinese history, shaping the culture, politics, and identity of China for centuries. It followed the brief but influential Qin Dynasty, which had laid the foundations for imperial rule but also faced internal strife and rebellion. The Han emerged as the new power, restoring stability and expanding China's borders, making significant contributions to science, technology, trade, and philosophy.
The dynasty's rise was primarily due to the leadership of Liu Bang, a former peasant who became Emperor Gaozu. He defeated his rival, Xiang Yu, and took control of the vast Qin Empire, establishing the Han Dynasty. Gaozu's leadership marked the beginning of a new era, one that would see the consolidation of power and the implementation of reforms that would shape the future of the empire.
The Han Dynasty’s political structure was deeply influenced by the collapse of the Qin Dynasty. Emperor Gaozu restored the decentralized feudal system of governance, but with modifications to ensure more central control. Over time, the emperors of the Han Dynasty would strengthen the centralized bureaucracy, establishing a model that would endure for centuries in imperial China. One of the key developments was the introduction of Confucianism as the state philosophy. Confucian ideals, emphasizing hierarchy, duty, and moral governance, became deeply embedded in the political and social structure of the Han Empire. Confucian scholars played an essential role in the administration, and the dynasty itself was viewed as a time when the state was governed by virtuous and learned rulers.

The Soul of the Helper - Seven...

There are many kinds of helpers in our world, the caregivers among us. They are the social workers who serve the vulnerable, the nurses and doctors who treat the ill, the teachers who instruct the young, the first responders who rescue the imperiled, the faith leaders who comfort the congregation, the volunteers who support the community. And whether or not it is our professional calling, each of us is likely to serve as a caregiver at some point in our lives. These and many other efforts to serve are among the most noble pursuits we can imagine, but they come with a danger worth recognizing.

In their devotion to the well-being of others, caregivers routinely put their own well-being last and can unintentionally burn themselves out physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Their self-neglect has the potential to stir up feelings of anger and resentment, leading to a sense of guilt and shame.

In The Soul of the Helper, Dr. Holly Oxhandler shows caregivers and fellow helpers a more self-compassionate way to cope with their overwhelming responsibilities and to attend to their own needs, particularly when it comes to their mental health and spiritual journey. She invites them to pause and realize that if they let their personal resources run dry, they cannot possibly care for others as fully as they wish.
