Sinopse

In the early 20th century, two towering figures emerged, their paths intertwining amidst the chaos and innovation of a world on the cusp of transformation: Albert Einstein, the physicist who revolutionized our understanding of the universe, and Pablo Picasso, the artist who shattered the boundaries of artistic expression.

"The Quantum and the Palette" tells the remarkable story of these two visionaries, exploring the parallels between their groundbreaking achievements and the profound impact they had on the world. Through their lives and works, we witness the convergence of art and science, the power of human creativity to illuminate the unknown, and the enduring legacy of those who dare to challenge the boundaries of human knowledge.

Einstein, a young patent clerk in Bern, Switzerland, embarked on a quest to understand the fundamental laws of the universe. His relentless pursuit of truth led him to question the long-held beliefs of classical physics, culminating in his groundbreaking theory of relativity. This revolutionary concept overturned centuries of scientific dogma, forever altering our perception of space, time, and gravity.

Picasso, a young artist from Málaga, Spain, was equally driven to explore the unknown. He rejected the traditional conventions of art, embracing new forms of expression that reflected the fragmented and chaotic nature of the modern world. His radical style, known as Cubism, shattered the illusion of a single, fixed perspective, inviting viewers to engage with multiple viewpoints and fragmented forms.

As their paths intertwined, Einstein and Picasso found common ground in their shared pursuit of truth and understanding. They recognized that art and science, though distinct disciplines, are united by a common thread: the human desire to explore the unknown and make sense of the world around us.

"The Quantum and the Palette" is more than just a biography of two extraordinary individuals. It is a celebration of human creativity and the enduring power of art and science to shape our understanding of the universe. Through the lives and works of Einstein and Picasso, we gain a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of all things and the boundless potential of the human mind.

What Kirkus describes as a "masterful revelation about life and art imitating each other in maintenance and repair" in a starred review, Dwell Time is an illuminating debut memoir by one of the few prominent Latinas in the field of art and architectural conservation; a moving portrait of a Cuban Jewish family’s intergenerational trauma; and a story about repair and healing that will forever change how you see the objects and places we cherish and how we manage damage and loss.

Renowned art conservator Rosa Lowinger spent a difficult childhood in Miami among people whose losses in the Cuban revolution, and earlier by the decimation of family in the Holocaust, clouded all family life.

After moving away to escape the “cloying exile’s nostalgia,” Lowinger discovered the unique field of art conservation, which led her to work in Tel Aviv, Philadelphia, Rome, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Charleston, Marfa, South Dakota, and Port-Au-Prince. Eventually returning to Havana for work, Lowinger suddenly finds herself embarking on a remarkable journey of family repair that begins, as it does in conservation, with an understanding of the origins of damage.

Inspired by and structured similarly to Primo Levi’s The Periodic Table, this first memoir by a working art conservator is organized by chapters based on the materials Lowinger handles in her thriving private practice – Marble, Limestone, Bronze, Ceramics, Concrete, Silver, Wood, Mosaic, Paint, Aluminum, Terrazzo, Steel, Glass and Plastics. Through Lowinger’s relentless clear-eyed efforts to be the best practitioner possible while squarely facing her fraught personal and work relationships, she comes to terms with her identity as Cuban and Jewish, American and Latinx.

Covering her life and sixty-year career from Sonny & Cher to show-stopping solo performer, award-winning actress, fashion icon, and beyond, this is a glorious retrospective of one of the world’s most enduring entertainers, Cher. Featuring a foreword by Cyndi Lauper!   Commemorating six decades since her first #1 hit in 1965, I Got You Babe captures Cher’s one-of-a-kind life. Written by award-winning writer and editor Annie Zaleski, this celebration of the fearless, down-to-earth “Goddess of Pop” explores key moments in her life and career in words and photos. Among the topics covered: Her 50-year friendship with fellow diva Tina Turner, which began in 1975 when they performed “Shame, Shame, Shame” together. Her story of creating a “revenge dress” with designer Bob Mackie for the 1986 Oscars after being snubbed for a nomination for her performance in Mask. The night in 1989 she made the Navy wish it could “Turn Back Time” by arriving at the USS Missouri to film her video not wearing the coveralls they expected but a barely-there fishnet bodysuit. Cher’s unfiltered social media presence. From classic posts like “BREAKING NEWS: IM BEING BURIED IN MY FISHNETS” to weighing in on issues she believes in. When Cher learned about Kaavan, dubbed “the world’s loneliest elephant.” The creature was kept in chains in a zoo in Pakistan and forced to perform for decades. After fans brought the problem to her attention, Cher eventually helped get him moved in 2021, and her efforts were captured in a Smithsonian documentary. Amid these moments are photo after photo of some of the most eye-popping outfits ever worn in life and on stage. As an avid clothes horse who wasn’t afraid to wear a see-through dress to the Met Gala in 1974, Cher’s many looks will be given their due in this engaging, career-spanning retrospective.

Designer, activist, and educator Cheryl D. Holmes-Miller is legendary for her
decades of scholarship and advocacy, and as a touchstone and conscience for the
design profession. In HERE: Where the Black Designers Are, Holmes-Miller
documents the history of—and answers to—the question she has been asking for
decades: “Where are the Black designers?”
Holmes-Miller explores this essential question through the lens of her own
development as a designer and leader, beginning with her own family and its rich
multiethnic history. She narrates her experiences as a design student at Rhode
Island School of Design (RISD), Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), and Pratt
Institute, leading up to her oft-cited Pratt thesis examining barriers to success for
Black designers. Holmes-Miller describes the work of her eponymous studio for
noted clients that included NASA, Time Inc., and the nascent Black Entertainment
Television (BET), as well as the story of her later critiques of the industry in Print
magazine and other design publications. Holmes-Miller also recounts the parallel
history of collective efforts by fellow scholars and advocates over the past fifty
years to identify and celebrate Black designers.
HERE is part memoir, part historical investigation, and an urgent call for justice
    and recognition for Black designers.
“This book is representative of the shoulders on which we, as Black graphic
designers, stand. These are the legacies we are fighting to uphold and the torches
we must continue to carry. The journey of the Black designer has not been easy. It
isn’t easy. And while we may be left out of history books, this is a reminder that we
are here. Always have been. Always will be.”—Tré Seals, Vocal Type
