The Netherlands had a great century in the 1600s, until it all ended about three-fourths along the way. Trading was all around, business was good. Their vast empire that reached across the world made money from spices, raw materials, metals, and so much more, with an extensive network of ships, merchants, and an entire army fleet.
The Dutch Golden Era was a time in Dutch history varying circa from 1588 (the start of the Dutch Republic) to 1672 (the "Catastrophe Year"), throughout which Dutch trade, science, and art, and the Dutch armed force, were amongst the world's best. The Eighty Years' War, which ended in 1648, controls the first area. Throughout the Dutch Republic, the Golden era lasted till the end of the century, when pricey fights like the Franco-Dutch War and the War of the Spanish Succession stimulated financial decrease.
    K. W. Swart, a historian, has called the Netherlands' change into the world's leading maritime and financial power the "Dutch Wonder."
In this book, you will learn all you need to know about this gigantic superpower that ruled a big part of the world for nearly an entire century: The Dutch Empire.

In 1620, a group of English families, known now as the Pilgrims, were carried from England to the New World on the Mayflower. When the Mayflower finally showed up in America on November twenty-first, 1620, it had 102 guests and a team of around 30 on board and was anchored off Cape Cod.
The Pilgrims, as opposed to their Puritan coworkers, chose to break away from the Church of England because of its Roman Catholic heritage and the church's hesitation to reform, requiring them to pray in personal instead of in the church. In 1608, a group of English families left England for the Netherlands, where they could practice their faith without fear of persecution. As early as 1620, the Plymouth Group population had determined to cross the Atlantic to the New World, which they viewed as a "new Promised Land."
Due to hold-ups and challenges, the Pilgrims were only able to take one ship, the Mayflower, to reach America in early October. It was a pretty hard winter season when they showed up in November, and they were unprepared. Consequently, hardly half of the original Pilgrims made it through the first winter season at Plymouth, Massachusetts. All of the settlers may have died if near Native tribes had not taught them how to collect food and other survival methods. On that first fall harvest, they gathered with Native Americans to celebrate what would end up being referred to as the first Thanksgiving in America.

Join leading social psychologists Roy Baumeister and Dianne Tice to discover what decades of data reveal about human sexuality. In this compelling audio series, renowned human behavior experts Roy Baumeister and Dianne Tice unravel the mysteries surrounding one of humanity’s most talked about but least understood forms of social interaction: sex. Playing the objective role of alien scientists observing human beings from outer space, they find patterns, puzzles, and paradoxes in how we make sexual decisions. Drawing on social psychology and even economics, they find new insights into age-old questions, such as:Do men really want to have sex more than women?Who is actually having lots of sex, and why?How has the internet changed sexual behavior? Why have so many societies tried to stifle female sexuality? In 19 eye-opening lectures, Drs. Tice and Baumeister delve into fascinating facts and findings to analyze human sexuality as a form of social interaction. While their discussions are strongly based in data about how mostly normal people make sexual decisions, they also explore larger issues about our sexual nature and motivations. This masterful audio course will answer all the questions you were afraid to ask and help you better understand human sexuality from a scientific vantage. This course is part of the Learn25 collection.

Big Med - Megaproviders and the...

There is little debate that health care in the United States is in need of reform. But where should those improvements begin? With insurers? Drug makers? The doctors themselves? In Big Med, David Dranove and Lawton Robert Burns argue that we’re overlooking the most ubiquitous cause of our costly and underperforming system: megaproviders, the expansive health care organizations that have become the face of American medicine. Your local hospital is likely part of one. Your doctors, too. And the megaproviders are bad news for your health and your wallet.

Drawing on decades of combined expertise in health care consolidation, Dranove and Burns trace Big Med’s emergence in the 1990s, followed by its swift rise amid false promises of scale economies and organizational collaboration. In the decades since, megaproviders have gobbled up market share and turned independent physicians into salaried employees of big bureaucracies, while delivering on none of their early promises. For patients this means higher costs and lesser care. Meanwhile, physicians report increasingly low morale, making it all but impossible for most systems to implement meaningful reforms.

In Big Med, Dranove and Burns combine their respective skills in economics and management to provide a nuanced explanation of how the provision of health care has been corrupted and submerged under consolidation. They offer practical recommendations for improving competition policies that would reform megaproviders to actually achieve the efficiencies and quality improvements they have long promised.

This is an essential read for understanding the current state of the health care system in America—and the steps urgently needed to create an environment of better care for all of us.
