Sinopsis

In a world awash with information and complexity, expertise has become more crucial than ever before. From the boardroom to the laboratory, from the concert hall to the operating room, experts are the ones who drive progress, solve problems, and shape the future.

Yet, despite its importance, there are many misconceptions about expertise. Some believe that experts are born, not made. Others believe that expertise is limited to a select few geniuses. And still others believe that expertise is something that can only be acquired through years of formal education.

This book challenges these myths and reveals the true nature of expertise. Drawing on the latest research in cognitive psychology, education, and neuroscience, this book provides a comprehensive and accessible overview of the cognitive processes, deliberate practice strategies, and motivational factors that underlie expert performance.

Through engaging stories and case studies of experts from diverse fields, this book illustrates how expertise is developed and how it can be applied to achieve extraordinary results in any domain. It also explores the challenges and limitations of expertise, as well as its implications for education, public policy, and the future of work.

Whether you are a student, a professional, or simply someone who is curious about the extraordinary abilities of the human mind, this book will provide you with a deeper understanding of expertise and inspire you to develop your own skills and achieve your full potential.

This book is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand the nature of expertise, develop their own skills, or make a difference in the world.

Malaysia is no easy country to analyse, or even to understand. With so many narratives about the country, its peoples, and its histories, the noise generated — both online and off — can be as deafening as that of any rave party.

Since 2019, Malaysians have lived through a unique period in the country’s history: Amid the Covid pandemic and its many challenges, Malaysia experienced three prime minister changes, and countless other political dramas and plot twists.

Signals in the Noise is not just a book on politics, though. Moving with ease between different sociopolitical and socioeconomic discourses, this collection of Ooi Kee Beng’s columns and commentaries — published between 2019 and 2023 — showcases more than ever his talent as a historian and philosopher, alongside his prowess as a political scientist.

This wide-ranging collection is a must-read beginner's guide to Malaysian politics. It also highlights Ooi’s love for his hometown of Penang, his concern for the environment, and how the arts define a society and its perceptions of the world.

Read by the author, Agnes Arnold-Forster.‘Arnold-Forster belongs to that valuable non-jargon-spouting breed of academic who is capable of explaining complex ideas in simple language.’ – The TimesIn Nostalgia: A History of a Dangerous Emotion, Agnes Arnold-Forster blends neuroscience and psychology with the history of medicine and emotions to explore the evolution of nostalgia from its first identification in seventeenth-century Switzerland (when it was held to be an illness that could, quite literally, kill you) to the present day (when it is co-opted by advertising agencies and politicians alike to sell us goods and policies).Nostalgia is a social and political emotion, vulnerable to misuse, and one that reflects the anxieties of the age. It is one of the many ways we communicate a desire for the past, dissatisfaction with the present and our visions for the future. Arnold-Forster’s fascinating history of this complex, slippery emotion is a lens through which to consider the changing pace of society, our collective feelings of regret, dislocation and belonging, the conditions of modern and contemporary work, and the politics of fear and anxiety. It is also a clear-eyed analysis of what we are doing now, how we feel about it and what we might want to change about the world we live in.

Aggression is rampant almost everywhere nowadays, sometimes in its legal and approved form and increasingly in illegal activities. Where it is approved, it may be called “getting on in the world,” that is, stepping on others’ heads so that you can get to the top. This is success in a worldly sense, but not in a Buddhist one. It is also approved of for men (though not by them for women!) as being a mark of mastery and virility, yet it will never bring happiness. For if people are mastered forcibly, then how will happiness follow for the one who inflicts suffering? The rationale is that “progress,” that materialistic god so widely worshipped, will not come about unless force and power are used. But this argument does not take into account the fact that, sooner or later, what is won by aggression will surely be lost through conflict.

7 Signs You Might Be Scared of...

Intimacy is a fundamental part of human relationships, yet for many, it can feel overwhelming, even terrifying. While the desire for deep emotional connection exists, fear often creates barriers that prevent meaningful bonds from forming. This fear of intimacy can manifest in various ways—some obvious, others more subtle—causing individuals to push people away, sabotage relationships, or struggle with vulnerability. Understanding these signs is the first step toward breaking free from the patterns that keep love and closeness at a distance.

Many people who fear intimacy are unaware of their struggle, believing their actions stem from a need for independence or personal space. While autonomy is essential, there is a significant difference between healthy boundaries and emotional avoidance. For those who experience anxiety around deep emotional or physical closeness, relationships can become a source of stress rather than comfort. The walls built to protect against hurt and rejection can also prevent the fulfillment that comes with genuine connection.

Fear of intimacy is not an isolated issue—it is often rooted in past experiences. Childhood attachment patterns, past heartbreaks, or even societal influences can shape one’s ability to trust and connect with others. If a person grew up in an environment where emotional needs were ignored or dismissed, they may learn to suppress their own feelings to avoid pain. Likewise, repeated experiences of betrayal or disappointment in relationships can reinforce the belief that intimacy leads to hurt, causing a person to unconsciously avoid closeness.
