Sinopsis

In a time of deep political division, America stands at a crossroads. Red and Blue America have become increasingly polarized, with little common ground and seemingly insurmountable differences.

This book delves into the causes and consequences of this polarization, exploring the role of political parties, the media, and social media in shaping public opinion. It examines the impact of political polarization on our democracy and our ability to solve the challenges facing our nation.

At the heart of the divide is a clash of values and beliefs. Red America, represented by conservatives, emphasizes traditional values such as patriotism, individualism, and free markets. Blue America, represented by liberals, emphasizes progressive values such as social justice, equality, and environmental protection.

These competing values often lead to gridlock in government, as politicians struggle to find common ground. This gridlock can have serious consequences, preventing progress on important issues such as healthcare, education, and climate change.

Political polarization also has a corrosive effect on our democracy. It makes it difficult for citizens to have productive conversations about politics, as they are often unwilling to listen to those who hold different views. This can lead to a breakdown in civil discourse and an increase in political extremism.

This book is a call for unity. It is a reminder that we are all Americans, regardless of our political beliefs. It is a plea for us to find common ground, to recognize that we share the same values and aspirations.

Only then can we heal our divisions and move forward as a united country.

When the Trinidadian novelist, Harold Sonny Ladoo was found dead soon after the publication of his classic novel, No Pain Like This Body, for Christopher Laird, it became an obsession to try to discover the writer behind the work and what had brought about his untimely end. Equal to Mystery – words written by Ladoo – is the record of that pursuit.

When, as the editor of a Trinidadian literary journal in the radical years of the early 1970s, Christopher Laird was sent Harold Sonny Ladoo's novel, No Pain Like This Body (1973) to review, he knew he was looking at something revolutionary in Caribbean fiction. It is a novel that has recently been republished as a Penguin Modern Classic. But the next news Laird heard of Ladoo was that he had returned to Trinidad from Canada and had been found dead – very probably murdered – in the canefields outside his family's village of McBean. Laird follows in the path of Ladoo to Canada, where he went to make a name for himself as a writer, and tracks him as a student and young married man through conversations with his widow and other family members. He looks in detail at his relationships with two Canadian writers, Dennis Lee and Peter Such, who supported his work, and in Lee's case published him. Here there is an acute account of their meetings across the line of race, of the mix of generous contact and elusive flight in their relationship. Above all, with access to Ladoo's unpublished material -- short stories and fragments of the vast body of fiction he announced he was writing -- Laird offers acute analysis of what is there, honest bafflement about just what Ladoo was up to, with a tragic sense of the talent that was lost through his untimely death.

Consolidated by the Norsemen in 841, Dublin became the capital of the Republic of Ireland (Eire) when the country gained formal independence in 1922. It is primarily an industrial city, and boasts distilleries, breweries and flour-mills among the more scenic delights that include the Tobacco Factory, the Customhouse, the 13th-century St Patrick's Cathedral and the Gothic-style Catholic church of St Audoen. As shown by the author, Ingo Latotzki, Dublin remains a city that is both poetic and tragic. It was here that Irishmen determined to achieve national independence instigated the Easter Rising of April 1916, an attempt at a revolt that the writer O'Flaherty has so well described in his many publications on the subject of ‘English' domination. Here too are the pubs and bars in which the inhabitants love to sing as they down their pints of ever-frothing stout.

A detailed history of the Ku Klux Klan and an examination of its operations in the Midwest and its legacy in America today.“A sweeping portrayal of the ugly role of the Ku Klux Klan in the Heartland and its blot on American history. . . . This book burns.”―Dan Wakefield, author of New York in the Fifties and Going All the Way“Who is an American?” asked the Ku Klux Klan. It is a question that echoes as loudly today as it did in the early twentieth century. But who really joined the Klan? Were they “hillbillies, the Great Unteachables” as one journalist put it? It would be comforting to think so, but how then did they become one of the most powerful political forces in our nation’s history? In The Ku Klux Klan in the Heartland, renowned historian James H. Madison details the creation and reign of the infamous organization. Through the prism of their operations in Indiana and the Midwest, Madison explores the Klan's roots in respectable white protestant society. Convinced that America was heading in the wrong direction because of undesirable “un-American” elements, Klan members did not see themselves as bigoted racist extremists but as good Christian patriots joining proudly together in a righteous moral crusade. The Ku Klux Klan in the Heartland offers a detailed history of this powerful organization and examines how, through its use of intimidation, religious belief, and the ballot box, the ideals of Klan in the 1920s have on-going implications for America today.“By now, 100 years later, the story of the spell cast by the evil D.C. Stephenson over the good people of Indiana is familiar to anyone who knows the state's story. But that's not the whole story, says historian James H. Madison in his revelatory new book, The Ku Klux Klan in the Heartland. The whole story is even more uncomfortable.” —Nuvo“Hard to take in, but easy to read . . . The Ku Klux Klan in the Heartland, is a do-read. Madison's account of the Ku Klux Klan combines primary source material and original research with his clean, vivid and well researched writing. While lots of nonfiction by academics is, well, academic, Madison is monstrously absorbable.”―The Herald Times
