Sinopse

In the heart of Europe lies Lille, a city that has witnessed centuries of turmoil and transformation. This book delves into the rich tapestry of Lille's history, exploring the forces that have shaped the city and its people over the centuries.

From its strategic location at the crossroads of Europe to its enduring spirit in the face of adversity, Lille's story is one of resilience, adaptation, and transformation. Through a comprehensive examination of primary sources, this book sheds new light on Lille's experience during the tumultuous Dutch revolt and its subsequent journey through the centuries.

Lille's tale begins in the 16th century, a time of religious and political upheaval. Caught in the crossfire of the Dutch revolt, the city's population found itself deeply divided along religious and economic lines. Radical factions emerged, escalating tensions and leading to the outbreak of violence. The subsequent siege of Lille by Spanish forces brought immense suffering and destruction upon the city and its people.

In the aftermath of the siege, Lille entered a new era of stability under Spanish rule. Protestantism was suppressed, and Catholicism was restored as the dominant religion. The city experienced economic and cultural revival, playing a significant role within the Habsburg Empire. However, the 17th century brought fresh challenges, including the rise of France as a major European power.

The French conquest of Lille in the 17th century marked a transformative moment in the city's history. French rule brought about significant economic and social changes, including the growth of new industries and businesses. Lille faced further challenges in the 18th century, including the social and political tensions arising from the Industrial Revolution. The 19th century witnessed Lille's involvement in major historical events, such as the Franco-Prussian War and the rise of socialism and labor movements.

The 20th century brought both triumphs and trials for Lille. The city endured the hardships of World War I and World War II, emerging with resilience and determination. In the postwar period, Lille confronted economic and social challenges, yet it also played a vital role in the European Union. As the city looks towards the future, it faces new opportunities and uncertainties in the 21st century.

This book is a comprehensive exploration of Lille's rich history, offering a unique perspective on the city's resilience and transformation. Through its detailed analysis of primary sources, the book sheds new light on Lille's experience during the Dutch revolt and its subsequent journey through the centuries. It is a must-read for anyone interested in European history, urban development, or the human experience in the face of adversity.

Before the Second World War, military conflicts were fought under orthodox conditions, usually termed “conventional warfare,” but several innovations had significantly changed combat, leading inextricably to the race for a nuclear weapon in the 1930s and 1940s. Conflicts had been fought by armies on horseback with guns of varying sophistication since the 16th century, but mechanized warfare and machine guns changed this calculus and set the stage for future combat by the end of World War I. Other sinister changes entered the fray during this conflict, such as chemical weapons like chlorine and mustard gas. The total warfare brought about by World War I and ensuing wars like the Spanish Civil War made the quest for the most powerful weapons somewhat necessary.
The Manhattan Project would ultimately yield the “Little Boy” and “Fat Man” bombs that released more than 100 Terajoules of energy at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, but as it turned out, the Axis were not far behind with their own nuclear weapons program. When the Nazis’ quest for a nuclear weapon began in earnest in 1939, no one really had a handle on how important nuclear weapons would prove to war and geopolitics. The attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, along with the Cold War-era tests and their accompanying mushroom clouds, would demonstrate the true power and terror of nuclear weapons, but in the late 1930s these bombs were only vaguely being thought through, particularly after the successful first experiment to split the atom by a German scientist. The nuclear age itself was in its infancy, barely 35 years old, but within a few short years the advent of nuclear war loomed over the world and the prospect of the enemy winning the nuclear race kept Allied leaders awake at night.

“P-please! I promise to be a good boy!”
I kneel before the ripped, suntanned alpha male, begging for his most precious gift. He’s the college quarterback and I’m the water boy. He’s my king and I’m his loyal servant.
This all began when the football team invited me into their hidden clubhouse. It began when they put a collar around my neck and fed me their seed. The strange flavor…it made my head spin and caused my muscles to relax.
I’ve never been the same since.

In an era of traditional political party decline, this book explores a new phase of nativist mobilization, in which street politics plays an increasingly important role. Movement parties offer an exceptional object of study since they challenge the conventional distinction between institutional and non-institutional politics. Examining the "production structure" of ten movement parties across nine European countries, the authors identify key factors that affect their engagement in protest activity. They address the organizational capacity, decision-making processes, and external mobilization of these collective actors using unique empirical material, including quantitative data on far-right protest mobilization spanning over a decade, protest network visualizations, and qualitative interviews with high-ranking officials.

The book provides fresh insights into how the far right spreads its influence and relates to non-institutional politics, making it essential for anyone concerned about the way in which nativist collective actors transform society from the ground up. A compelling study looking at the relationship between electoral politics and grassroots activism, Movement Parties of the Far Right illuminates the complex organizational and strategic choices underlying far-right mobilization.
