In the annals of World War II, the Pacific theater often takes a backseat to the more well-known European and North African campaigns. This is the story of the American-Filipino guerrillas and their enigmatic leader, Chick Parsons.

Operation "Spyron" was a daring mission that saw Parsons sail from Australia to enemy-occupied Mindanao in the Philippines by submarine, no less than eight times. His objective: to coordinate a guerrilla movement that would strike at the heart of the Japanese forces, disrupting their supply lines, gathering intelligence, and keeping the flame of resistance alive.

The American-Filipino guerrillas were a diverse group of men and women, united by their love of country and their unwavering determination to fight for freedom. They came from all walks of life: farmers, fishermen, students, and even former soldiers. They were poorly equipped and outnumbered, but they possessed an indomitable spirit that would not be broken.

Their tactics were as unconventional as their composition. They moved like ghosts through the jungle, striking at the Japanese with lightning speed and disappearing before they could retaliate. They relied on hit-and-run attacks, ambushes, and sabotage to weaken the enemy and keep them off balance.

The guerrillas' contributions to the Allied victory in the Pacific theater were immense. They provided valuable intelligence, disrupted Japanese supply lines, and kept the Japanese forces constantly on edge. Their actions played a pivotal role in the liberation of the Philippines and the eventual surrender of Japan.

In 1982, the United Kingdom and Argentina fought a war over an historical disagreement over the colonial “ownership” or rights over the Falkland Islands. Within months of the Argentinian defeat, General Edgardo Calvi, then the Argentine Head of the Army Joint Chief of Staff, was instructed to undertake a wide-ranging and formal inquiry to investigate the performance of the Argentine Army during the Falklands. To build a better internet, we need to change how it is owned and organized. Otherwise, a small number of executives and investors will continue to make choices on everyone's behalf, and these choices will remain tightly bound by the demands of the market. It's time to demand an internet by, and for, the people now.
