Sinopse

Plato's early dialogues are a treasure trove of philosophical insights that have captivated thinkers for centuries. In this comprehensive and engaging book, we embark on a journey to unveil the spirit of these dialogues, exploring the depths of Plato's thought and uncovering the timeless wisdom that lies within.

Through a careful examination of Plato's seminal works, we delve into the complexities of his ideas, unraveling the enigmas that have intrigued philosophers and scholars for millennia. We question the nature of reality, seeking to understand the true essence of existence beyond the realm of sensory perception. We explore the enigmatic concept of Forms, contemplating the eternal and immutable realm of perfect ideals that Plato believed lay beyond the physical world.

Furthermore, we delve into the intricate workings of the human soul, seeking to unravel its mysteries and understand its relationship to the body and the divine. We examine Plato's ethical theories, pondering the nature of virtue and the pursuit of the Good, and explore his vision for an ideal society governed by philosopher-kings.

This book is not merely an academic exercise; it is an invitation to engage with Plato's thought on a personal level. We encourage readers to question their own assumptions about the world around them, to seek wisdom and understanding, and to strive for a life of virtue and purpose.

Whether you are a seasoned Plato scholar or a newcomer to his philosophy, this book will provide you with a deeper appreciation for the profound impact Plato's thought has had on Western civilization. The Showa Era began on December 25, 1926, with the ascension of Emperor Hirohito following the death of his father, Emperor Taisho. This period marked a critical turning point in Japan’s history, as the nation transitioned from the political turbulence of the Taisho democracy to a time of increasing militarism and nationalist sentiment. Although the early years of the Showa Era were characterized by economic struggles and political instability, they also set the stage for Japan’s dramatic expansion and eventual involvement in global conflict.
Emperor Hirohito’s rise to the throne was met with both hope and uncertainty. Many saw him as a symbol of continuity and strength, while others were concerned about the growing influence of the military in governmental affairs. Unlike his father, whose reign was defined by a parliamentary democracy, Hirohito’s early years as emperor witnessed the gradual erosion of democratic institutions. The shift toward a more authoritarian government was driven by widespread dissatisfaction with the parliamentary system and the belief that Japan needed strong leadership to navigate domestic and international challenges.
One of the most pressing issues Japan faced at the beginning of the Showa Era was economic instability. The global economy had already begun to weaken, and in 1929, the Wall Street Crash sent shockwaves through Japan’s financial system. The economic downturn led to mass unemployment, factory closures, and widespread poverty, exacerbating social tensions. Farmers, who made up a significant portion of Japan’s population, suffered greatly as the price of rice plummeted, leading to rural hardships that fueled growing resentment toward the government. In response, nationalist and ultraconservative factions gained popularity, advocating for territorial expansion as a means to secure resources and economic stability.

Claudia Black, along with over a dozen world-renowned psychotherapists including Pia Mellody, Peter Levine, Patrick Carnes, Richard Schwartz, Resmaa Menakem, and Tian Dayton, provides clinical, human-focused insights on healing, treatment, and recovery.
People today are struggling with an unprecedented rise in mental health concerns such as depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, behavioral addictions, suicide, and more. The greatest barriers to getting help are their shame, their self-loathing, and the belief that their situation is hopeless. Undaunted Hope destigmatizes these disorders and invites readers to take the first step to help: asking for it.
Through the narratives of twenty-one alumni from Meadows Behavioral Healthcare, world-renowned treatment facilities, readers may see themselves in parts of the stories—and ultimately find the courage to ask for help. Each storyteller reveals the origins of their struggles, the chaotic course of events leading up to treatment, what help entailed, and how their lives became richer, fuller, and more hopeful once they were willing to take the first step toward healing.
This urgent and timely book presents the stories of the therapeutic work that occurs in Meadows' facilities, recognizing that trauma is most often the underlying issue to people’s struggles. The groundbreaking work at The Meadows has been validated by the landmark Adverse Childhood Experience Study (ACEs) carried out by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the past twenty-five years. These studies repetitively demonstrate the relationship of various traumas to mental health, substance abuse, and behavioral healthcare problems.
