Sinopse

In a world transformed by globalization, migration, and digital technologies, our understanding of identity and belonging is undergoing a profound transformation. This book explores these complex issues through the lens of visual culture, examining how contemporary artists from around the world have grappled with themes of identity, belonging, and displacement.

Through a series of thought-provoking essays, this book delves into the work of artists who have used their art to explore the complexities of identity in a rapidly changing world. From the haunting images of displacement and loss in the work of Mona Hatoum to the vibrant and celebratory expressions of identity in the art of Alfredo Jaar, this book offers a kaleidoscope of perspectives on the human experience in the 21st century.

This book also examines the role of art in shaping public discourse around issues of identity and belonging. From the powerful street art of Banksy to the immersive installations of Ai Weiwei, artists are increasingly using their work to raise awareness of social and political issues and to advocate for change.

Through the work of contemporary artists, it offers a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities that we face as we navigate the complexities of the 21st century.

Long-time art critic Richard Dorment reveals the corruption and lies of the art world and its mystifying authentication process.

Late one afternoon in the winter of 2003, art critic Richard Dorment answered a telephone call from a stranger. The caller was Joe Simon, an American film producer and art collector. He was ringing at the suggestion of David Hockney, his neighbor in Malibu. A committee of experts called the Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board had declared the two Warhols in his collection to be fake. He wanted to know why and thought Dorment could help.

This call would mark the beginning of an extraordinary story that would play out over the next ten years and would involve a cast of characters straight out of a n novel. From rock icons and film stars; art dealers and art forgers; to a murdered Russian oligarch and a lawyer for the mob; from courtrooms to auction houses: all took part in a bitter struggle debating the authenticity of a series of paintings by the most famous American artist of the twentieth century. Part detective story, part art history, part memoir, and part courtroom drama, Warhol After Warhol is a spellbinding account of the dark connection between money, power, and art.

“[Alan Niven] worked with us and — whether anybody says it or not — became like the sixth, silent member.” — Izza Stradlin, Guns N’ Roses

Experience rock history through sharp, engaging stories featuring icons like Guns N’ Roses, The Rolling Stones, and Aerosmith

Most rock ’n’ roll books are a bore. They all have the same narrative arc and are aimed at the dwindling following that now follows an artist that has long passed their AARP date.

Sound N’ Fury does not have a story arc. It is a collection of anecdotes, like a record comprised of various tracks — each one has its point and purpose. Alan Niven, who guided Guns N’ Roses from the gutter of Los Angeles to Wembley Stadium, shares stories from his remarkable life as a manager with an immediacy delivered by an extraordinary recall of dialogue. Readers will encounter not just Guns N’ Roses (who have sold almost 10 million tickets to their shows) but The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Clarence Clemons, Whitesnake, Elton John, and others who came from humble origins and experienced fame known only to few. Small-town minds collided with worldwide adulation, expectations, and demands. The results are amusing, affirming, and, predictably, disastrous. Keep in mind that rock ’n’ roll is God’s occupation for the unemployable.

Written with a crisp and fluid style, the magnificence and idiocy of the music world will dance off the pages and engross even those who are not rock fans.

Nicolas Poussin(1594 - 1665) was undoubtedly a highly significant master of the historical genre. He shaped its aesthetics which, regrettably, subsequently became regarded as a set of hard-and-fast rules (a trap which the Russian followers of the founder of classicism also fell into). We know that Poussin attributed prime significance to the actual choice of matter for depiction, giving preference to subjects which provided food for profound thought. Creatively reworking the aesthetic legacy of the Ancients, he introduced into the realm of painting the concept of the "modus" (mood of depiction), which established the functional unity of three components: the idea, the structure of the depiction, and its perception by the viewer. Composition assumed a predominant significance in his artistic system. In a letter of 1665, Nicolas Poussin put forward three main theses: firstly, painting is simply imitation; secondly, it aims to bring delight; Thirdly, the artist is endowed with a natural talent that no one can give him or deprive him of.

‘My future mother-in-law burst into tears when she heard her son was to marry an actress. There’s still something disturbing, I grant you, about the word “actress”. If an MP or some other outstanding person plays fast and loose with an actress the world is unsurprised. She is certainly no better than she should be, and probably French…’
As well as being a mother (to the actresses Sophie and Emma Thompson) and a devoted carer to her own mother and mother-in-law, Phyllida Law is also a distinguished actress, and Dead Now Of Course is the tale of her early acting career.
As a young member of a travelling company, Phyllida learned to cope with whatever was thrown at her, from making her own false eyelashes to battling flammable costumes and rogue cockroaches. We find her in Mrs Miller’s digs, which were shared with a boozy monkey bought from Harrods, an Afghan hound known as the ‘the flying duster’, several hens and various children.
Filled with funny, charming anecdotes, Dead Now Of Course paints a fascinating picture of life in the theatre – and at the heart of the story is an enchanting account of Phyllida’s courtship with her future husband, the actor and writer Eric Thompson.
This bestselling book by Phyllida Law is a personal and entertaining autobiography that delves into her journey in the performing arts. Her memoirs, which have made her the Sunday Times bestselling author, are filled with captivating stories and experiences.
For fans of Nina Stibbe (Went to London, Took the Dog), William Miller (Gloucester Crescent), Alan Bennett (Enough Said), India Knight (The Goodness of Dogs), and Maggie O'Farrell (I Am, I Am, I Am).
