Sinopse

Embark on an intellectual journey that explores the intricate relationship between language and thought, the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, and its implications for our understanding of the world. This book delves into the depths of linguistic relativity, shedding light on the ways in which the structure of our language shapes our perception of reality.

Through a comprehensive examination of linguistic relativity, we uncover the historical roots of this hypothesis, tracing its evolution from the pioneering work of Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf to contemporary research and debates. We navigate the diverse methodologies employed to study linguistic relativity, evaluating the evidence for and against its claims.

Discover fascinating case studies and experiments that illustrate the profound impact language can have on our cognition. From the Dani tribe of Papua New Guinea, whose language lacks words for specific colors, to the Inuits of the Arctic, whose language distinguishes between different types of snow, we explore how linguistic diversity shapes our perception of the world.

Delve into the implications of linguistic relativity for cross-cultural communication, language teaching, and artificial intelligence. Understand how language can influence our understanding of gender, time, space, and technology. Gain valuable insights into the human experience and foster greater empathy and understanding among people from diverse linguistic backgrounds.

This book is an invitation to explore the enigmatic relationship between language and thought. Through a comprehensive examination of linguistic relativity, we gain a deeper appreciation for the power of language and its profound influence on our understanding of the world. It is an essential read for linguists, anthropologists, psychologists, educators, and anyone fascinated by the intricate workings of human communication and cognition.

We broke our new series on learning Bulgarian down into different learning stages. Start with the “Lower Beginner” books followed by the “Beginner” and “Upper Beginner” books. Next, progress to the “Intermediate” series, then test and reinforce your knowledge with the “Conversations” series.
This audiobook is divided into units. While it provides different learning patterns and accommodates various needs, this audiobook focuses on helping you improve your ability to understand, speak, and memorise Bulgarian. The sample will give you a taste of what you can look forward to.
In Unit 1 you will hear Bulgarian decoded with each syllable spoken very slowly and clearly with repetition. Immediately before each sentence is spoken, you will hear the translation, so you will always understand what is being said. Unit 2 focuses solely on increasing your listening ability, which will improve your abilities to engage in dialogue with a native Bulgarian speaker. This chapter requires you to listen very carefully to nuances in the language.
By Unit 3 you will already notice progress in your abilities to speak and understand Bulgarian. The spoken translation is followed by two repetitions in Bulgarian at a completely natural speed. While you are learning to process naturally spoken Bulgarian, Units 3 and 4 will help you memorise new vocabulary and full sentences. In Unit 5 you can test yourself on how much you have learned. If you are having difficulties, we suggest you revisit the listening, speaking, or memorisation section of Units 1, 2 3 or 4, according to what you need more help with.
