Sinopsis

In a world where authenticity and individuality are prized, coolness stands as a beacon of self-expression and empowerment. For African Americans, coolness is more than just a style; it's a way of life, a shield against adversity, and a source of pride.

This book takes a deep dive into the multifaceted nature of coolness in Black America, exploring its historical roots, cultural significance, and contemporary expressions. Through a blend of personal anecdotes, historical accounts, and cultural analysis, we paint a vivid picture of how coolness has evolved over time, shaping everything from music and fashion to politics and social activism.

We delve into the psychology of coolness, examining the traits and characteristics that make someone cool, and how these qualities can be cultivated and expressed in different contexts. We also explore the intersection of coolness with identity, race, class, and gender, revealing how these factors influence the way coolness is perceived and experienced.

This book is not just a celebration of coolness; it's also a critical examination of its potential pitfalls. We acknowledge that the pursuit of coolness can sometimes lead to inauthenticity, elitism, and a sense of alienation. However, we argue that when coolness is rooted in genuine self-expression and a commitment to positive values, it can be a powerful force for good in the world.

With insights from scholars, artists, activists, and everyday people, this book offers a fresh perspective on an enduring cultural phenomenon. It's a must-read for anyone interested in African American culture, sociology, or the ever-evolving concept of coolness.

Discover Henry David Thoreau’s philosophy of living a good life and learn how to apply it to your own.   The hero for our time is someone few people get right. Thoreau wasn’t a hermit in the woods. He lived during a time like ours, of rapid technological and economic changes, political division, and a pandemic. Thoreau, like us, reassessed his priorities: What does success really look like? What is my duty as an ethical citizen of a less-than-ethical world? How can I live a good life amid (insert hand-sweeping gesture) all of this?   His solution: Pare down to trade up.  Finding Your Walden combines classic literature with happiness studies, exploring how experts—psychologists, career coaches, and doctors—support Thoreau’s ideas as guideposts for today’s Great Reassessment. It combines insights of the 1854 classic with people who embrace the pare-down-to-trade-up philosophy today, whether through major life changes (such as tiny homes or sabbaticals) or smaller life hacks (like digital sabbaths or meditation practices). Their stories inspire us to apply creativity, simplicity, and peace to the experiment of life.  Finding Your Walden isn’t about shunning money or success. It’s about grappling with the purpose of the first and the meaning of the second. Whether you love Walden or haven’t read it, you can join Thoreau on a path to discover an intentional life during a volatile time—you just need to make a stop at a cabin on the way.

It is only a very silent mind that can actually see - 30 May 1967
    - Conflict exists only when there are two opposing things: fear and non-fear,violence and non-violence.
    - A mind that is in a state of inquiry is entirely different from a mind that is seeking. Seeking implies effort, conformity, authority and therefore conflict.
    - Without space in which there is no boundary, the mind is incapable of comingupon immeasurable reality.
    - It is only a silent mind that can perceive, actually see, not a chattering mind, acontrolled mind, a mind that is tortured, suppressed, yielding or indulging.
    - When one has totally denied the psychological world which man has created, and the psychological structure of society of which we are, then there is spaceand silence.
    - Q: Could you de ne contemplation and meditation?
    - Q: It is not possible ever to observe totally one's own irrational thoughts.

Roman Catholic public schools in England emerged from the early 1800s as part of the wider educational mission of a Catholic church seeking to support a growing Catholic population.

Around a dozen such schools – male, boarding, upper class and staffed by priests, monks and brothers from the dioceses and religious orders – had emerged by the early twentieth century. Some – Ampleforth, Stonyhurst, St Edmund’s, Beaumont, the Oratory, Downside, or Prior Park – catered for an aristocratic clientele, whilst others – Douai, Mt St Mary, Ratcliffe or Cotton – sought more middle class pupils. Their objectives were similar: the creation of a new Catholic elite which might take its place in the Establishment.

By the mid-twentieth century, they were at their zenith, but at the millennium they faced the challenges of declining vocations to the religious life, a stagnant Catholic population, and a series of child sexual abuse cases.

Educating in Faith seeks to place a diverse set of school histories within the wider demographic, social and religious development of Roman Catholicism in England. It seeks to move beyond the finer detail of school histories to better understand the place of the public schools within the Catholic educational mission and the nature of the academic, cultural and spiritual character of these institutions. As co-education, increasing competition, the disappearance of a religious workforce in the schools and the child sexual abuse crises altered school environments, the book reflects on the contemporary relevance, place and character of these schools.

Searching through the annals of North American history uncovers the diverse and astounding contributions by the Natives of the Americas who formed the world we know today.

In the Shadow of Our Ancestors explores the rich history of the indigenous peoples of North America and leaves us in awe of their stunning achievements and inventions:

The Great Law of Peace — The ideals, words and symbols of the Iroquois Confederacy inspired the governments of the New World to form democracies that recognized, in their constitutions, the rights of all people.

Potatoes — The lowly potato, a staple food of Natives for almost 15,000 years, was unknown outside the Americas until Europeans arrived; now, with almost 4000 varieties, it is the fourth most-consumed agricultural product in the world.

Sacagawea — The settlement of western North America was inspired and influenced by the results of the Lewis and Clark expedition in the early 1800s, with the journey’s success made possible because of a Native woman named Sacagawea, whose presence paved the way for the explorers to be seen as a peaceful party.
