Sinopsis

In the heart of California, a battle for the future of energy is brewing. Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), one of the largest utilities in the United States, is facing a growing chorus of criticism. The company has been accused of neglecting its infrastructure, leading to a series of deadly wildfires. It is also under fire for its cozy relationship with regulators and its resistance to renewable energy.

A group of activists decide they have had enough. They file a lawsuit against PG&E, alleging that the company is violating the public trust. The case drags on for years, but in the end, the activists prevail. A judge orders PG&E to overhaul its operations and invest in renewable energy.

This landmark victory is a major turning point for the energy industry. It shows that utilities can be held accountable for their actions and that the public has a right to clean, affordable energy. It also inspires other communities across the country to challenge the status quo and demand a more sustainable energy future.

But the fight is far from over. PG&E and other utilities are pushing back, spending millions of dollars on lobbying and public relations campaigns to protect their profits. And the Trump administration is rolling back environmental regulations, making it easier for utilities to pollute.

This book tells the story of the PG&E lawsuit in detail, from the early days of the activists' campaign to the final courtroom victory. It also explores the broader context of the energy crisis, including the rise of renewable energy, the challenges of climate change, and the need for a more just and equitable energy system.

This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the challenges and opportunities facing the energy industry today. It's a story of hope and inspiration, and it shows us that it is possible to create a clean energy future for all.

Breaking the Gender Code - Women...

From the closing years of the nineteenth century, women received subtle—and not so subtle—messages that they shouldn't be in public. Or, if they were, that they were not safe. Breaking the Gender Code tells the story of both this danger narrative and the resistance to it.

Historian Georgina Hickey investigates challenges to the code of urban gender segregation in the twentieth century, focusing on organized advocacy to make the public spaces of American cities accessible to women. She traces waves of activism from the Progressive Era, with its calls for public restrooms, safe and accessible transportation, and public accommodations, through and beyond second-wave feminism, and its focus on the creation of alternative, women-only spaces and extensive anti-violence efforts. In doing so, Hickey explores how gender segregation intertwined with other systems of social control, as well as how class, race, and sexuality shaped activists' agendas and women's experiences of urban space. Drawing connections between the vulnerability of women in public spaces, real and presumed, and contemporary debates surrounding rape culture, bathroom bills, and domestic violence, Hickey unveils both the strikingly successful and the incomplete initiatives of activists who worked to open up public space to women.

In 1814, the Richmond Lunatic Asylum at Grangegorman in Dublin
started an extraordinary programme of asylum building across Ireland,
aimed at alleviating the suffering of people with mental illness who were
homeless, in prison, or confined in appalling circumstances.
By the mid-twentieth century, Ireland had proportionately more people in
'mental hospitals' than any other country in the world. On a given night,
the number of people in Ireland's psychiatric hospitals was more than
double those in all our other institutions put together: prisons, laundries,
mother and baby homes, industrial schools, orphanages.
What was the life of a patient in an asylum really like?

Discover a proven pathway for transforming shame from a self-punishing emotion into a powerful ally for your health and happiness.
Why do we feel shame? Given how painful and destructive shame can be, it’s easy to see this emotion as an inner demon that turns our own mind against us. Yet shame is a universal emotion—and it serves an important purpose. “While toxic shame can keep us stuck in a self-defeating vortex,” say Bret Lyon and Sheila Rubin, “there is a healthy expression of shame designed to protect us, help us change, and actually build our self-esteem.”
With Embracing Shame, these expert teachers share an invaluable guide to an emotion so volatile that most of us—including therapists—avoid talking about it. Here this husband and wife team, cofounders of the Center for Healing Shame, examine the dynamics of shame, the reasons it arises, why it causes such harm, and how we can heal its negative effects. Through case studies, creative tools, and body-based practices, they invite you to explore:
    • The purpose of shame—How it is meant to protect and guide us, and why it gets distorted into a self-sabotaging emotion• How shame disguises itself by “binding” to other emotions—and methods for disentangling these complex feelings• The ways shame forms in childhood, evolves as we grow, is impacted by trauma, and takes residence in the body• Practical guidance for regulating common shame-based challenges—including the inner critic, imposter syndrome, perfectionism, intimacy in relationships, and much more
While no amount of self-talk, personal success, or therapy can eradicate shame, we can transform shame into the supportive, health-promoting force it was meant to be. Created as a go-to resource for laypersons and healing professionals alike, Embracing Shame offers an achievable path for reclaiming the true potential of this vital emotion to help us grow, connect, and find a new confidence in the way we move through life.
