Sinossi

In a world of shifting alliances and hidden agendas, power is the ultimate currency. Those who possess it can shape the destiny of nations, while those who lack it are left at the mercy of those who do.

But what is power, truly? Is it simply the ability to control others, or is it something more? And what are the consequences of wielding power?

This book delves into the nature of power, exploring its different forms and manifestations. It examines the corrupting influence of power and the responsibility of those who wield it. It also explores the human condition, our hopes and dreams, our fears and insecurities, and our search for meaning and purpose in a world that is often confusing and chaotic.

Ultimately, this book is about the choices we make. We all have the power to choose how we use our power. We can choose to use it for good or for evil. We can choose to build up or to tear down. We can choose to create or to destroy.

The choice is ours.

This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand the nature of power and its role in human affairs. It is a thought-provoking and challenging book that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

    The False Promise of Superiority...

This political analysis exposes the fanciful logic that the United States can use nuclear weapons to vanquish nuclear adversaries or influence them when employing various coercive tactics.

During the Cold War, American policymakers sought nuclear advantages to offset an alleged Soviet edge. Policymakers hoped that US nuclear capabilities would safeguard deterrence, when backed perhaps by a set of coercive tactics. But policymakers also hedged their bets with plans to fight a nuclear war to their advantage should deterrence fail. In The False Promise of Superiority, James H. Lebovic argues that the US approach was fraught with peril and remains so today. He contends that the United States can neither simply impose its will on nuclear adversaries nor safeguard deterrence using these same coercive tactics without risking severe, counterproductive effects. As Lebovic shows, the current faith in US nuclear superiority could produce the disastrous consequences that US weapons and tactics are meant to avoid. This book concludes that US interests are best served when policymakers resist the temptation to use, or prepare to use, nuclear weapons first or to brandish nuclear weapons for coercive effect.

Marx started work on this book in January 1847, as can be judged from Engel's letter to Marx on January 15, 1847. By the beginning of April 1847, Marx's work was completed in the main and had gone to the press. On June 15, 1847, he wrote a short foreword.

Published in Paris and Brussels in 1847, the book was not republished in full during Marx's lifetime. Excerpts from section five of Chapter Two appeared in different years, mostly between 1872 - 1875 in papers such as La Emancipacion, Der Volksstaat, Social-Demokrat, and others. In 1880 Marx attempted to publish the Poverty of Philosophy in the French socialist newspaper L'Égalité, the organ of the French Workers' Party, but only the foreword and section one of Chapter One were published.

This translation is from the original 1847 French edition. It has been updated to also include the changes/corrections Marx made in the copy of the book he presented to N. Utina in 1876, as well as the corrections made by Frederick Engels in the second French edition and the German editions of 1885 and 1892. The first English edition of this work was published in 1900 by Twentieth Century Press.

How to Lose a War - The Story of...

An incisive, authoritative account of the West's failures in Afghanistan, from 9/11 to the fall of Kabul

In 1958, Richard Nixon described Afghanistan as "unconquerable." On August 15, 2021, he was proven right. After twenty years of intervention, US and NATO forces retreated, enabling the Taliban to return to power. Tens of thousands were killed in the long, unwinnable war, and millions more were displaced—leaving the future of Afghanistan hanging in the balance.

Leading expert Amin Saikal traces the full story of America's intervention, from 9/11 to the present crisis. After an initial swift military strike, the US became embroiled in a drawn-out struggle to change Afghanistan but failed to achieve its aims. Saikal shows how this failure was underlined by protracted attempts to capture Osama bin Laden, an inability to secure a viable government via "democracy promotion" efforts, and lack of wider strategy in the "war on terror."

How to Lose a War offers an insightful account of one of the US's most significant foreign policy failures—and considers its dire consequences for the people of Afghanistan.
