The Uncanny Muse explores the history of automation in the arts and delves into one of the most momentous and controversial aspects of AI: artificial creativity. The adoption of technology and machinery has long transformed the world, but as the potential for artificial intelligence expands, David Hajdu examines the new, increasingly urgent questions about technology's role in culture.

Hajdu traces the fascinating, varied ways in which inventors and artists have sought to emulate mental processes and mechanize creative production. For decades, machines and artists have engaged in expressing the human condition—along with the condition of living with machines—through player pianos, broadcasting technology, electric organs, digital movie effects, synthesizers, and motion capture. By communicating and informing human knowledge, the machines have exerted considerable influence on the history of art—and often more influence than humans have been willing to recognize. As Hajdu proclaims: "before machine learning, there was machine teaching." With thoughtful and surprising turns from Berry Gordy and George Harrison to Andy Warhol and Stevie Wonder, David Hajdu takes a novel and contrarian approach: he sees how machines through the ages have enabled creativity, not stifled it—and The Uncanny Muse sees no reason why this shouldn't be the case with AI today.

The German film industry transformed from a collection of independent studios into a division of the Nazi Party between 1933 and 1945. German film became a crucial component of the Nazi campaign to ideologically indoctrinate the German populace as part of the Ministry for Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda, led by Joseph Goebbels. However, the business kept up its prior commercial practices and made movies aimed at paying German consumers. Even though Goebbels worked hard to turn German cinema into an ideological weapon, the theater served as a popular consumer marketplace, and the various film tastes of German moviegoers continued to affect the kinds of films made. Therefore, filmmaking in Nazi Germany was influenced by popular taste and Goebbels' ideological objectives.
This book will look at several movies that demonstrate Goebbel's evolving propaganda objectives and the changing preferences of the German audience for movies during the Nazi era. Box office statistics from the years before and after the start of World War II offer unique insight into German film consumption and serve to highlight the extent to which the general public supported the war in Germany.

Deriving from the French word rocaille, in reference to the curved forms of shellfish, and the Italian Barocco, the French created the term Rococo. Appearing at the beginning of the 18th-century, it rapidly spread to the whole of Europe. Extravagant and light, Rococo responded perfectly to the spontaneity of the aristocracy of the time. In many aspects, this art was linked to its predecessor, Baroque, and it is thus also referred to as late Baroque style. While artists such as Tiepolo, Boucher and Reynolds carried the style to its apogee, the movement was often condemned for its superficiality. In the second half of the 18th-century, Rococo began its decline. At the end of the century, facing the advent of Neoclassicism, it was plunged into obscurity. It had to wait nearly a century before art historians could restore it to the radiance of its golden age, which is rediscovered in this work by Klaus H. Carl and Victoria Charles.
