Born in Peoria, Illinois, he had a difficult childhood growing up in a brothel. Pryor's career evolved from middlebrow comedy to a more controversial style after a transformative moment in Las Vegas. He incorporated profanity and racial themes into his routines, earning him widespread recognition and critical acclaim. Pryor won numerous awards, including a Primetime Emmy and five Grammy Awards. He also starred in films and co-wrote Blazing Saddles. He was also known for his personal struggles, including substance abuse and multiple sclerosis. His influence on comedy is immense, and his legacy is still celebrated today.

    Richard Pryor's early life was far from ordinary as he grew up in a brothel run by his grandmother, where his mother worked as a prostitute. He was also sexually abused at the age of seven and later expelled from school at 14. 
      
    Pryor served in the U.S. Army, but spent most of his time in military prison for his involvement in an incident where he and other black soldiers assaulted a white soldier who laughed at racially charged scenes in a film. Despite this, he was also a member of Henry Brown Lodge No. 22, where he became a Prince Hall Freemason. 
      
    Before his breakthrough as a controversial comedian, Pryor started as a middlebrow comic, taking inspiration from Bill Cosby. He appeared on mainstream television shows like The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show, and even had success as a comic in Las Vegas.
