Sinopsis

Chaos and Complexity in the Social World: Foundations and Applications offers a comprehensive introduction to the application of chaos and complexity theory to the social sciences. This groundbreaking book explores the methodological challenges of studying chaotic and complex systems and discusses the implications of chaos and complexity theory for our understanding of a wide range of social phenomena, including political behavior, economic dynamics, and social change.

Traditional social science approaches, which often rely on linear models and equilibrium assumptions, have struggled to account for the complexity of the social world. Chaos and complexity theory offers a new framework for understanding the social world, one that is based on the idea that the social world is composed of complex systems. Complex systems are characterized by a large number of interconnected elements that interact in nonlinear ways. This means that even small changes in the initial conditions of a complex system can lead to large and unpredictable changes in its behavior.

Chaos and complexity theory has a number of implications for our understanding of the social world. First, it suggests that the social world is inherently unpredictable. This means that it is impossible to perfectly predict the future course of events, no matter how much data we have about the past.

Second, chaos and complexity theory suggests that the social world is constantly evolving. Complex systems are always in a state of flux, and they are constantly adapting to their changing environment. This means that the social world is never static, and it is always changing in unexpected ways.

Third, chaos and complexity theory suggests that the social world is full of opportunities for innovation and creativity. Complex systems are constantly generating new patterns and possibilities. This means that there is always the potential for new ideas and solutions to emerge.

Chaos and Complexity in the Social World is essential reading for students and scholars of the social sciences who are interested in understanding the complex and dynamic nature of the social world. This book also provides a valuable resource for policymakers and practitioners who are working to address the challenges of the 21st century.

By the time of Egypt’s Nineteenth Dynasty, the Egyptians had created a vast empire that stretched from what would be the modern region of northern Sudan in the south to southern Syria in the north (Kuhrt 2010, 1:185). With control of such a vast empire, the Egyptians were able to export valuable minerals such as gold and silver, which were much rarer in the other Near Eastern kingdoms, and imported horses, timber, and chariots that they used to build their impressive military. A chronological examination of ancient Egypt during the New Kingdom reveals the process in which Egypt transitioned from a regional kingdom to an international empire. The examination will demonstrate that the New Kingdom was a fairly complex system that brought about several changes in pharaonic culture before ultimately collapsing.
Compared to some of their contemporaries – including the Egyptians, Assyrians, and Babylonians – the Hittites were somewhat distant both culturally and geographically. The Hittites were an Indo-European speaking in an ocean of Afro-Asiatic and Semitic groups, their homeland was to the north of Mesopotamia, and it contained no major river like the Nile, Tigris, or Euphrates Rivers. The Hittite empire was also far less enduring than its neighbors, as it only existed from about 1800-1200 BCE (van de Mieroop 2007, 156), which was considerably shorter than most of the other major kingdoms of the Near East.
Like a number of ancient individuals and empires in that region, the negative perception of ancient Assyrian culture was passed down through Biblical accounts, and regardless of the accuracy of the Bible’s depiction of certain events, the Assyrians clearly played the role of adversary for the Israelites. Indeed, Assyria (Biblical Shinar) and the Assyrian people played an important role in many books of the Old Testament and are first mentioned in the book of Genesis.

Long acclaimed as one of America’s preeminent novelists, Jane Smiley is also an unparalleled observer of the craft of writing. In The Questions That Matter Mostthis Pulitzer Prize–winning writer offers steady and penetrating essays on some of the aesthetic and cultural issues that mark any
serious engagement with reading and writing. Beginning with a personal introduction tracing Smiley’s migration from Iowa to California, the author reflects on her findings in the varied literature of the Golden State, whose writers have for decades litigated the West’s contested legacies of racism,
class conflict, and sexual politics through their pens.

As she considers the ambiguity of character and the weight of history, her essays provide new entry points into literature, and we lucky readers can see how Smiley draws inspiration from across the literary spectrum to invigorate her own writing.

With enthusiasm and meticulous attention, Smiley dives beneath surface-level interpretations to examine the works of Marguerite de Navarre, Charles Dickens,Anthony Trollope, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Louisa May Alcott, Mark Twain, Willa Cather, Franz Kafka, Halldór Laxness, and Jessica Mitford.
Throughout, Smiley seeks to think harder and, in her words, with “more clarity and nuance” about the questions that matter most.

    Resisters - How Ordinary Jews...

    Wolf Gruner

Drawing on twelve years of research in dozens of archives in Austria, Germany, Israel, and the United States, this book tells the story of five Jewish people—a merchant, a homemaker, a real estate broker, and two teenagers—who bravely resisted persecution and defended themselves in Nazi Germany. These stories have not been told until now, and each case is one of many, as Gruner shows by resurfacing similar accounts of Jewish refusal to accept persecution and violence in Germany and Austria between 1933 and 1943, upending the notion of passive Jews, and expanding the concept of resistance.

Each individual described here represents a category of resistance: written opposition, oral protest, contesting Nazi propaganda, defiance of anti-Jewish laws and measures, and self-defense against physical attacks. Many of these courageous acts resulted in the resisters being prosecuted and put on trial, and often receiving harsh punishments, while some led to acquittal by courts and others to changes in Nazi policies. Taken together, these accounts reframe our understanding of German Jewish attitudes during the Holocaust, while also providing an astonishing examination of the complex Nazi reactions to the many individual acts of Jewish resistance.
