This marked the first time two former world champions met in a final; Italy had previously won the World Cup in 1934 and 1938, while Brazil won in 1958 and 1962. After the incomparable Pele opened up the scoring in the 18th minute, Brazil would go on to win the match, 4-1, making Pele the only player in futbol history to win three World Cups.
