Sinopse

In the tapestry of American history, the struggle for justice and equality has been particularly poignant. Native Americans have endured centuries of oppression, displacement, and cultural genocide, leaving a deep scar on the American psyche.

This book offers a uniquely Indian solution to the legacy of colonialism and imperialism that continues to haunt American society. Drawing upon the wisdom of tribal traditions and the power of community, it charts a path toward healing and renewal.

The author argues that the disintegration of American society is a symptom of a deeper malaise, a crisis of identity and belonging. The glittering generalities and mythologies of American society no longer satisfy the need and desire to belong.

The solution lies in embracing the wisdom of tribalism, the power of community, and the importance of tradition. Native American tribalism offers a model for a more just and harmonious society, one that is based on reciprocity, respect, and sustainability.

This book is a call to action, a call for a new beginning. It is time to confront the legacy of colonialism and imperialism, acknowledge the harm it has caused, and work together to build a more just and equitable world.

This book is essential reading for anyone who is concerned about the future of America. It is a powerful and provocative call for change, a vision for a better future for all.

How did a marginal dialect spoken in the late ninth century by 200,000 people become the world's language spoken by 1.6 billion people today? In Amorous or Loving? – The Highly Peculiar Tale of English and the English, Sir Rupert Gavin charts the unique evolution of our language into the resulting hodge-podge that is now the lingua franca of the world. He argues that English is ideal as the global language, not just by accident of history, but by fundamental construction and constitution. Further, he examines how all of this was determined not just by our unique language, but also our geography, our weather, our religion, the extraordinary status of London, and by a handful of inspirational figures – some well-known and some hardly known today at all.

The formation of the National Assembly marked a turning point in history, reshaping governance and laying the foundation for constitutional rule. It emerged from the political turmoil of a monarchy struggling with financial crises, social unrest, and an outdated feudal system. The roots of the National Assembly can be traced back to the Estates-General, a centuries-old advisory body that had long been dormant. When King Louis XVI convened the Estates-General in 1789 to address France’s dire economic situation, he unintentionally set the stage for a political transformation that would redefine the nation.
The Estates-General was composed of three estates: the clergy, the nobility, and the commoners, known as the Third Estate. Each estate traditionally held equal voting power despite vast disparities in population and influence. The Third Estate, which represented the majority of the French people, found itself consistently outvoted by the privileged classes. Frustration over this imbalance, coupled with widespread demands for political reform, led the Third Estate to take a decisive stand. Rejecting the old voting structure, its representatives declared themselves the true voice of the nation and proclaimed the formation of the National Assembly on June 17, 1789. This act was not merely a procedural shift but a bold assertion of sovereignty, challenging the very legitimacy of absolute monarchy.
The declaration of the National Assembly was met with immediate resistance from the monarchy and conservative factions. King Louis XVI initially dismissed the move, attempting to maintain control through traditional authority. However, support for the Assembly grew rapidly, fueled by Enlightenment ideals advocating for representative government and individual rights.

The Tashkent-born Russian-American literary critic, editor, essayist, and journalist Vladislav Davidzon has been covering post-Soviet Ukraine for the past ten years, a tumultuous time for that country and the surrounding world. The 2014 "Revolution of Dignity" heralded a tremendous transformation of Ukrainian politics and society that has continued to ripple and reverberate throughout the world.

In late 2015, a year and a half after the 2014 Revolution swept away the presidency of the Moscow-leaning kleptocratic President Viktor Yanukovich, Davidzon and his wife founded a literary journal, The Odessa Review, focusing on newly emergent trends in film, literature, painting, design, and fashion. The journal became an East European cultural institution, publishing outstanding writers in the region and beyond. From his vantage point as a journalist and editor, Davidzon came to observe events and know many of the leading figures in Ukrainian politics and culture, and to write about them for a Western audience. Davidzon later found himself in the center of world events as he became a United States government witness in the Ukraine scandal that shook the presidency of Donald Trump. This eagerly anticipated debut tells the real story of what happened in Ukraine from the keen and resilient perspective of an observer at its center.

Urban disasters have become an increasingly pressing concern as the world continues to urbanize at an unprecedented rate. Cities, once seen as bastions of opportunity and progress, are now at the forefront of vulnerability to both natural and human-made catastrophes. The rapid growth of urban populations, coupled with poorly planned infrastructure and environmental challenges, has created a precarious landscape where the impact of disasters can be catastrophic.
One of the primary drivers of urban disaster risk is the sheer scale of urbanization. By 2050, it is estimated that nearly 70% of the world’s population will reside in urban areas. This rapid urban migration often leads to the expansion of informal settlements, where millions live in overcrowded conditions with inadequate access to basic services such as clean water, sanitation, and healthcare. These areas, typically located in hazard-prone zones like floodplains and unstable hillsides, are particularly vulnerable to disasters. When disasters strike, the lack of preparedness and resilience in these communities amplifies the loss of life and property.
Climate change further exacerbates the threat of urban disasters. Rising global temperatures are intensifying the frequency and severity of natural hazards, such as hurricanes, floods, heatwaves, and wildfires. Coastal cities, home to millions, face increasing risks from sea level rise and storm surges, threatening vital infrastructure and displacing large populations. Additionally, the interconnected nature of urban systems means that the failure of one critical system, such as electricity or transportation, can cascade into widespread disruptions, leaving cities paralyzed in the wake of a disaster.
