Sinopse

In the aftermath of World War II, Berlin, a city scarred by war, found itself at the crossroads of history. Divided among the victorious Allied powers, each sector became a microcosm of the emerging Cold War tensions. As the city struggled to rebuild, its people faced the harsh realities of occupation, deprivation, and uncertainty about their future.

Yet, amidst the ruins, a resilient spirit emerged. Berliners, determined to reclaim their city, embarked on a remarkable journey of reconstruction, both physical and emotional. This book delves into the heart of Berlin during this tumultuous period, exploring the struggles, triumphs, and transformations that shaped its destiny.

From the Berlin Airlift, a lifeline that defied a Soviet blockade, to the eventual fall of the Berlin Wall, this book weaves a tapestry of human resilience, courage, and the indomitable spirit that ultimately prevailed over adversity. Through the eyes of its inhabitants, we witness the complexities of living in a divided city, where allegiances were tested and loyalties divided.

A Divided Soul is a poignant exploration of a city and its people caught in the throes of history, a story that continues to resonate with profound significance in our contemporary world. It is a testament to the enduring power of hope, the strength of the human spirit, and the transformative nature of unity in the face of adversity.

“Reconstruct[s] Civil War cold cases and crimes through the people who lived to tell about them . . . a unique history.”—MLive   “Crime did not take a holiday during the Civil War, far from it. As Tobin Buhk shows in this fast-paced narrative, the war created new opportunities to gain profits from illegal activities, to settle old scores against personal enemies under the cover of fighting the nation's enemies, to pillage, plunder, and murder amid the carnage and destruction that seemed to offer license to legitimize such crimes. Students of the Civil War will find new information in this readable account.” —James M. McPherson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom   This history of the rampant crime that took place in both the North and South amid the chaos of the American Civil War examines cases including currency counterfeiting; the tyrannical actions of Gen. Benjamin Butler; the murder of Gen. Earl van Dorn; the Detroit Draft Riot; the Rebel plot to burn New York City; raids by William Quantrill’s Bushwhackers; the Fort Pillow Massacre; the horrific prison conditions at Andersonville; the fate of the Lincoln assassination conspirators; and more.  Includes photographs

Weaving personal narrative with political analysis, Community as Rebellion offers a meditation on creating liberatory spaces for students and faculty of color within academia. Much like other women scholars of color, Lorgia García Peña has struggled against the colonizing, racializing, classist, and unequal structures that perpetuate systemic violence within universities. Through personal experiences and analytical reflections, the author invites listeners—in particular Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and Asian women—to engage in liberatory practices of boycott, abolition, and radical community-building to combat the academic world's tokenizing and exploitative structures.

García Peña argues that the classroom is key to freedom-making in the university, urging teachers to consider activism and social justice as central to what she calls "teaching in freedom": a progressive form of collective learning that prioritizes the subjugated knowledge, silenced histories, and epistemologies from the Global South and Indigenous, Black, and brown communities. By teaching in and for freedom, we not only acknowledge the harm that the university has inflicted on our persons and our ways of knowing since its inception, but also create alternative ways to be, create, live, and succeed through our work.

"Dear Tulsī, you are much beloved by Lord Kṛṣṇa because your leaves are always at His lotus feet. Dear mālatī flower, dear mallikā flower, dear jasmine flower, all of you must have been touched by Kṛṣṇa while He was passing this way after giving us transcendental enjoyment. Have you seen Mādhava passing this way? O mango trees, O trees of jackfruit, O pear trees and āsana trees! O blackberries and bael trees and trees of the kadamba flower—you are all very pious trees to be living on the bank of the Yamunā. Kṛṣṇa must have passed through this way. Will you kindly let us know which way He has gone?" The Srimad Bhagavatam

Tulsi Devi (Vrinda - Holy Basil) is a sacred plant in Hindu belief. She is regarded as an earthly manifestation of the goddess Srimati Tulsi Devi, and is as an avatar of Lakshmi, and thus the consort of Vishnu. The offering of her leaves is mandatory in the worship of Bhagavan Sri Krishna. Tulsi is regarded as the holiest of all plants and a bridge between heaven and earth. A traditional prayer teaches the creator Brahma and the Ganges resides in her branches, all holy pilgrimage centers in her roots, all deities are in her stem and leaves, and the Vedas are found in the upper part of her branches. The Tulsi herb is a center of household devotion, and is often referred to as the "women's deity" and "a symbol of wifehood and motherhood." Vaishnavites consider it as the manifestation of god in the plant kingdom. Tulsi Devi is one of Krishna’s most intimate servants coming to bless us all with extraordinary fortune. She has delicate purple and green leaves, flower tassels (like miniature temple spires), and an arresting, sweet fragrance famous for attracting the minds of yogis to Krishna’s service via Bhakti Yoga. Tulasi’s wood is carved into the Japa beads on which devotees chant Krishna’s holy name.
