Sinopse

In the midst of the chaos and uncertainty of the Mexican-American War, one man's journal offers a rare glimpse into the realities of combat, the resilience of the human spirit, and the profound impact of war on individuals and nations.

Dr. Thomas Neely Love, a surgeon in the Second Regiment Mississippi Infantry, left behind a firsthand account of his experiences in his journal, a powerful and moving narrative that transports readers back in time to one of the most significant events in American history.

Love's journal is not only a valuable historical document but also a deeply personal story of courage, resilience, and humanity. Through his eyes, we witness the transformation of a nation, the birth of new heroes, and the enduring legacy of a conflict that continues to shape the United States today.

From the early battles of the war to the final push towards Mexico City, Love's journal takes readers on a gripping journey through the horrors of combat, the challenges of providing medical care in a time of chaos, and the emotional toll on the soldiers.

But Love's journal is more than just a chronicle of war. It is also a story of hope, resilience, and the enduring power of the human spirit. Love's compassion for his patients, his unwavering dedication to his duty, and his ability to find moments of beauty and grace even in the darkest of times are a testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

In this book, we delve into the pages of Love's journal, exploring the complexities of the Mexican-American War and its lasting impact on the United States. We follow Love's journey from his home in Mississippi to the battlefields of Mexico, and we witness the transformation of a young doctor into a seasoned veteran. We also explore the broader context of the war, examining its causes, consequences, and legacy.

Through Love's eyes, we gain a deeper understanding of the sacrifices made by those who served in the Mexican-American War, and we are reminded of the profound impact that war can have on individuals, communities, and nations.

Miscarriage is a deeply personal and often painful experience that affects millions of women and families worldwide. Despite its prevalence, it remains a topic shrouded in silence, leaving many to navigate their grief alone. This book aims to provide comfort, understanding, and hope to those who have experienced miscarriage, offering guidance through the emotional and physical healing process.

For many, the loss of a pregnancy brings a complex mix of emotions—grief, guilt, anger, and even isolation. Society often struggles to acknowledge miscarriage as a significant loss, leading many women to feel as though they must grieve in silence. Friends and family may offer well-meaning but unhelpful advice, leaving those affected feeling misunderstood. It is important to recognize that miscarriage is not just a medical event but an emotional and psychological one as well. The pain of losing a child, even in the early stages of pregnancy, is real and valid.

While no two experiences are exactly alike, one common thread among those who have suffered miscarriage is the search for meaning and healing. Some find solace in talking about their experience, while others prefer quiet reflection. Many turn to faith, support groups, or counseling to help them process their grief. Regardless of the path taken, healing is possible, and hope can be found even in the darkest moments.

A vibrant new vision of food justice that celebrates Black food and recognizes the power of gathering to create sustainable, systemic change.

How can we create a world where everyone has enough? We can start by focusing less on lack and more on abundance.

In Gather, anthropologist Ashanté M. Reese argues for a new vision of food justice that centers the resilience of Black communities and argues that community nourishment deserves as much consideration as individual health. Highlighting four spaces of gathering―gardens, family reunions, repasts, and protests ―Reese offers rich, on–the–ground studies of the places and people who make up the food justice movement. From Black church networks and community farms to student protests, these studies illuminate ways we can challenge structures of power and nourish ourselves, body and soul. In a world of social isolation and unequal food systems, Gather offers a compelling argument for the beauty and political power of togetherness.

An action-oriented approach for businesses to solve the world’s most urgent social problems — and benefit from doing so.

More than a year into a global pandemic, profit and shareholder value are no longer the primary metric of business success. Customers, shareholders, and communities are demanding that companies do good, do more, and do better. In Change for Good, Paul Klein shows how companies must move beyond what he calls “corporate social responsibility light” and demonstrate how they can help solve social problems that have been defined as UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Change for Good is a new system for making social change through business that reflects Paul’s experience over the last 35 years. One of the core principles of Change for Good is including people with lived experience of social problems in identifying promising solutions and collaborating to bring these solutions to life. This methodology can create impactful and sustainable social change in society in ways that aren’t possible when executives make decisions in their boardrooms that are intended to impact the lives of vulnerable people.

Through personal experiences, case studies, and practical tools, Change for Good will inspire readers and their organizations to make the shift from a passive social responsibility to taking action to help solve the world’s most pressing social problems.

If I asked you how many Robin Hoods you could name, what would the list be like?

I’m sure you’d reel off a whole host of famous actors, like Errol Flynn, Douglas Fairbanks, Kevin Costner, Michael Praed, Sean Connery, and John Cleese, to name but six. All of these men have played the role of Robin Hood in various television and movie adaptations of the famous story.

But that’s not what I meant.

I’m talking about Robin Hood himself; the ever popular and ever noble outlaw hero who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor, with his trusty bow and arrow as his weapon of choice. The leader of a band of like-minded outlaws, christened the Merry Men (‘merry’ – in this instance – derives from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning ‘illustrious, famous, great, mighty’, etc. In the same sense, Hood means ‘hoodlum, thief, thug, criminal’). Robin Hood was a champion for justice, fighting against the oppression of the evil Sheriff of Nottingham and his right-hand man Guy of Gisbourne, all under the watchful eye of the wicked Prince John (who had been placed on the throne as a substitute monarch whilst his brother, King Richard The Lionheart, fought in the Crusades).

Of course, that was only one Robin Hood. Very much like the various incarnations that have appeared in classic novels, Hollywood movies, television series, radio serials and theatrical plays, Robin Hood was more than one man.
