Sinopse

It has been more than 50 years since the extraordinary British rock band Van der Graaf Generator released their legendary fourth studio album, Pawn Hearts. It remains a mind-splitting masterpiece that fascinated an entire generation of music lovers. Written by well-known progressive rock author Paolo Carnelli, this is the most extensive treatise of its kind on this seminal 1971 record. Starting with the birth of the Pawn Hearts concept from live band experience, the song rehearsals and eventually the recording of the album material, what follows is a detailed track-by-track musical and lyrical analysis. Specific chapters are dedicated to the making and the meaning of the artwork and to the band's collaboration with King Crimson’s Robert Fripp. The last part of the book deals with the press reaction to the album and the unexpected release of the ‘Theme One' single in 1972. The final chapter contrasts an initial performance of ‘A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers’ in March 1972 with the band’s 2013 tour, which presented this rarely performed epic once again, and ends with a detailed Pawn Hearts discography. The book is enhanced by a preface by Gary Lucas and some fresh comments from David Jackson, Hugh Banton, Guy Evans, Peter Hammill, Stephen W. Tayler and Paul Whitehead.

The authorOne of the most distinguished Italian prog rock journalists, Paolo Carnelli has been writing about music for over 30 years. A devoted researcher of Van der Graaf Generator and Peter Hammill efforts, he already published Van der Graaf Generator - La Biografia Italiana (2013), the first, highly acclaimed biography of the band in Italian, and Behind and Beyond - Le storie dietro le copertine (2022), revealing the stories behind every Van der Graaf Generator cover artwork. He is the Editorial Director of Prog magazine, Italian edition, and he also runs the online webzine Open Magazine.

From bass player to lead guitarist, singer and last remaining founding member, Steve Diggle has been the driving force keeping Buzzcocks alive since he first met Pete Shelley in 1976. Together they would ignite the Manchester music scene, kickstart indie and become one of the best loved and most influential punk groups of all time.

Following Shelley's untimely death in 2018, Autonomy is Diggle's definitive inside account of their shared musical legacy and complex friendship through the band's rise, fall, and rise again - from their punk origins supporting Sex Pistols with original singer Howard Devoto to Top of the Pops, the excess of success, break-up, reformation and life beyond bereavement.

Funny, honest and touchingly philosophical, it is also Diggle's very personal story of working class escape, dreams, redemption and loss - an ultimately heroic survivor's tale from an irrepressible rock 'n' roll spirit.

The story of China's imperial unification represents one of history's most consequential political transformations. "Imperial Chinese Foundations: Uniting the Land" explores the three dynasties that forged China's imperial system—a political structure that would endure for over two millennia.
The brief but revolutionary Qin Dynasty (221-206 BCE) ended centuries of warring states by conquering all rivals under the leadership of the First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang. Through military might, standardized writing, currency, measurements, and a unified legal code, the Qin created China's first centralized bureaucratic empire—though their harsh Legalist policies triggered rebellion after the emperor's death.
The Western Han Dynasty (206 BCE-9 CE) consolidated imperial rule through a more pragmatic blend of Confucian ideology and centralized governance. Under Emperor Wu's dynamic leadership, the Han expanded Chinese territory, opened the Silk Road, established the civil service examination system, and created cultural and political institutions that would define Chinese civilization for millennia.
As power shifted to the Eastern Han (25-220 CE), the dynasty initially flourished before facing mounting challenges from natural disasters, court intrigues, and the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Yet even as political cohesion weakened, this period saw remarkable innovations—including paper, the seismograph, and advances in mathematics and medicine—while Buddhism began its profound influence on Chinese civilization.
Through examining these three foundational dynasties, we witness the birth and evolution of the imperial Chinese state that would serve as a template for governance across East Asia and continue to influence Chinese identity into the modern era.

In this landmark collection, William T. Vollmann offers a kaleidoscopic retrospective of the visual artwork he has produced over four decades, with new commentary from Vollmann on his process, inspiration, and the many intersections with his writing.

The celebrated author of over twenty-five books (among them the National Book Award–winning novel Europe Central; the seven-volume Rising Up and Rising Down, based on Vollmann's career as a war correspondent; and the two-volume climate change investigation Carbon Ideologies), Vollmann's equally ambitious and prolific career as a photographer, printmaker, and painter reflects the artist’s deep interest in people existing on the margins, a profound empathy for his subjects, and the humility and generosity to meet them on their terms.

In Shadows of Love, Shadows of Loneliness, a series of essays commissioned especially for this book lays out Vollmann's views on what photographs can and should say, how he chooses what to represent (beauty, suffering, compassion, love, desire, ideology), thoughts on photographic consensuality, and any number of technical descriptions. Particularly useful for Vollmann fans and scholars are the cross-references between these artistic and photographic projects and his books.
