Sinopsis

On the steppes of Mongolia, an old woman wrestles with an unknown power The dream is always the same: Killers are riding against the Mongol camp, and Khokakhchin must run to rescue the horses before a wall of fire swallows them whole. She wakes, remembering when a trader offered her the Eye of Flame—a disk that could conjure fire—and shudders in fear of the power that lies within her. In the camp of a Mongol tribe, the home of the boy who will grow up to be Genghis Khan, Khokakhchin must confront that power, lest the whole world be consumed by fire.   In the haunting title novella, Pamela Sargent evokes a lost world whose values are not so different from our own. This and the other stories included in this volume, set in the past and the present, show her to be a deft writer at the top of her form.

Millennial #snowflakes clash with #baby-boomers: Nineteen tales of human connection and disconnection that collide and subvert the half-crazed romantic contemporary, the not so distant rosy past, our dodgy looking promised cyberpunk utopia and our post-apocalyptic dystopian future. Provocative, wistful, melancholic, nightmarish and darkly funny satire, these episodes…must surely play out logically. Or not.
How far will these characters go for love, understanding or survival? To Sainsbury's, the Caribbean or Tibet, up a ladder, under Biotech's robotic knives, or…to the brink of sanity? A pack of reluctant hopeful lone wolves: one builds a cabin, one a bike, another joins a teen gang. The refugee, the bereaved, the gaslighted child and the helpful neighbour all wander. The quixotic therapy addict just fibs like hell. And the porn voyeurs? The always-on algorithm search engine media junkies? Well, they do what they do, right #now.
Welcome to the curious world of If this Then That.

Six has always been a number we group things around – Six of the best, six of one half a dozen of another, six feet under, six pack, six degrees of separation and a sixth sense are but a few of the ways we use this number.

Such is its popularity that we thought it is also a very good way of challenging and investigating an author’s work to give width, brevity, humour and depth across six of their very best.

In this series we gather together authors whose short stories both rivet the attention and inspire the imagination to visit their gems in a series of six, to roam across an author’s legacy in a few short hours and gain a greater understanding of their writing and, of course, to be lavishly entertained by their ideas, their narrative and their way with words.

These stories can be surprising and sometimes at a tangent to what we expected, but each is fully formed and a marvellous adventure into the world and words of a literary master.

G.K. Chesterton's first publication, "Greybeards at Play" is a collection of poetry and accompanying illustrations. The work is marked by the irreverent whimsy and ancient delight that would eventually be recognized as Chesterton's signature style. Short (only four poems long and a dedication), playful, and with a touch of awe, Chesterton's first piece (written at 26) is appropriately titled: it is the work of an amateur, mature in his spirit, young in his play
