Sinopse

In "Saturday Night Thoughts," Orson F. Whitney delivers a poignant and contemplative collection of essays that blend personal reflection with profound spiritual insights. Written in a lyrical and engaging style, the book invites readers to delve into the complexities of human experience, weaving together themes of faith, society, and the quest for truth. Set against the backdrop of the early 20th century, Whitney's work resonates with the spiritual revivalism of the period, reflecting the intertwining of contemporary issues with timeless doctrines and philosophies. A prominent figure in the early Latter-day Saint movement, Orson F. Whitney was not only a writer but also a poet, evangelist, and a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. His diverse experiences and commitment to exploring the spiritual dimensions of life greatly influenced his writing. The tensions between faith and modernity, which permeated his era, compelled Whitney to craft essays that bridge the gap between staunch religious beliefs and a rapidly evolving societal landscape. "Saturday Night Thoughts" is a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of faith's role in navigating life's challenges. Whitney's eloquent prose and profound insights serve not only as a source of inspiration but also as a gentle guide for those wrestling with their own beliefs in a complex world.

Love. Love now. Love always. Time and lives are wasting.

All of the humans in schools—kids and adults—deserve joy. Yet, our experiences in schools, and the experiences of our students, are often far from joyful.

Humans Who Teach invites readers to explore the complicated humanity of those who teach, with a focus on how we have been socialized to accept the status quo, our very real fears in disrupting the status quo, and how we can rely on our human capacity to love to engage in teaching for social justice even in the presence of fear.

“In a sea of voices seeking to continue the deprofessionalization and dehumanization of teachers, Humans Who Teach powerfully speaks back to these voices and reminds educators that, first and foremost, they are human. And within their humanity lie transformative possibilities for cultivating lives and classrooms characterized by love.” — from the foreword by Drs. Bettina L. Love, Gholdy Muhammad, and Yolanda Sealey-Ruiz

Democritus - Atoms and the Birth...

Democritus, often referred to as the "laughing philosopher," was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher who is best known for his atomic theory of the universe. His ideas have significantly shaped modern science, especially in physics and chemistry. Democritus proposed that everything in the universe is made up of small, indivisible particles called atoms. These atoms are eternal, unchangeable, and infinite in number, differing only in shape, size, and arrangement. He was a strong proponent of materialism, the idea that everything that exists is composed of matter and that the properties of the world can be explained by the properties and interactions of atoms.
In addition to his contributions to atomic theory, Democritus also made significant contributions to epistemology, the study of knowledge. He suggested that our senses are the primary means by which we perceive the world, though they can sometimes be deceptive. His ideas influenced many later philosophers, including Leucippus, Epicurus, and even modern scientists like John Dalton, whose 19th-century atomic theory was inspired by Democritus's concepts.
Despite the lack of direct empirical evidence in his time, Democritus's theories laid the groundwork for the development of scientific thought and inquiry. He emphasized reason and observation over mythological explanations, helping to shape the way we understand the material world. Though much of his work has been lost to history, Democritus's legacy endures, continuing to inspire scientific exploration and contributing to our understanding of the universe.

    Greatest Generals of the Roman...

The Roman army is one of the most famous fighting forces in history. Through its power and prowess, a once obscure Italian city forged an empire that encircled the Mediterranean and covered half of Europe. The physical remains of its presence can be traced from the mountainous borders of Scotland to the arid deserts of Egypt, but its legacy is far greater and more enduring, as Rome's influence continues to shape the political, legal, and cultural landscape of Europe to this very day.
While the Roman army is rightly famed as an institution, the image of the individual legionary is also an iconic one. The uniformed, disciplined soldier of the late Republic and early Empire is one of the first things many people imagine when they think of Rome. They are the ultimate image of the ancient soldier, their arms and armor instantly recognizable. Their abilities, not only as warriors but also as engineers and administrators, have made them role models for other soldiers through the centuries. In the same vein, their commanders are still celebrated and studied, and generals the world over have tried to emulate the likes of Julius Caesar.
While he remains far less known than his rival Hannibal, Publius Cornelius Scipio, the man who has become known to history as Scipio Africanus, is widely regarded as one of the greatest military leaders of all time. In the space of less than 10 years, the genius of Scipio took Rome from being on the brink of utter destruction to becoming the dominant power in the Mediterranean.
Ironically, Gaius Marius’s reforms had made the legions fiercely loyal to their individual generals rather than the state, which allowed his eventual rival Sulla to march his army against Rome and force Marius into exile. With that, Rome’s first civil war was officially underway, but Sulla’s triumph proved short-lived.
