Developed since the sixth century, practised by the royal elite and Buddhist scholars, and packed with spiritual meaning, Japanese calligraphy has its own style: simple, elegant and gentle. Starting with a history section that illuminates thousands of years of calligraphy with inspiring examples, the core of the book is a clear step-by-step guide to creating stunning calligraphy. The 15 projects, from a greetings card to painting calligraphy motifs on river pebbles and linen hangings, represent authentic uses of Japanese scripts. The combination of simple strokes and meaningful characters that makes up each of these unique projects means you can create artworks that will give you and your loved ones truly enduring results. A clear materials section shows you exactly what you need to start, while the comprehensive techniques chapter demonstrates how to hold the brush, create characters and write pieces. Anyone who has ever crammed for a test, capitulated to a grade-grubbing student, or fretted over a child's report card knows that the way we assess student learning in American schools is freighted with unintended consequences. As experts agree, our primary assessment technologies—grading, rating, and ranking—don't actually provide an accurate picture of how students are doing in school. Worse, they distort student and educator behavior in ways that undermine learning and exacerbate inequality. Yet despite widespread dissatisfaction, grades, test scores, and transcripts remain the currency of the realm.

In Off the Mark, Jack Schneider and Ethan Hutt explain how we got into this predicament, why we remain beholden to outmoded forms of assessment, and what we can do to change course. They offer a range of practical reforms, like embracing multiple measures of performance and making the so-called permanent record "overwritable." As they explain, we can remake our approach in ways that better advance the three purposes that assessment currently serves: motivating students to learn, communicating meaningful information about what young people know and can do, and synchronizing an otherwise fragmented educational system. Off the Mark is a guide for everyone who wants to ensure that assessment serves the fundamental goal of education—helping students learn.

This audiobook is a manifesto for those who are tired of pretending not to care.
“Apathy isn’t peace. It’s emotional starvation.”
It’s a mirror, a fire, and a hand reaching out from the noise — reminding you that your ability to give a f*** is not your weakness.
    It’s your power.
Give a F*** will make you laugh, think, and maybe cry a little — but more than that, it will make you remember.
Remember who you are when you stop numbing, start feeling, and finally let yourself care again.*

Aggression is rampant almost everywhere nowadays, sometimes in its legal and approved form and increasingly in illegal activities. Where it is approved, it may be called “getting on in the world,” that is, stepping on others’ heads so that you can get to the top. This is success in a worldly sense, but not in a Buddhist one. It is also approved of for men (though not by them for women!) as being a mark of mastery and virility, yet it will never bring happiness. For if people are mastered forcibly, then how will happiness follow for the one who inflicts suffering? The rationale is that “progress,” that materialistic god so widely worshipped, will not come about unless force and power are used. But this argument does not take into account the fact that, sooner or later, what is won by aggression will surely be lost through conflict.
