Sinopsis

"TV Network Wars" explores the intense competition among television networks and its profound influence on programming and audience engagement. It reveals how the pursuit of genre dominance and market share directly shapes the content we watch. The book highlights that networks often strategically position themselves within specific genres to capture audience attention, leading to predictable programming patterns. For instance, one might find that a network known for crime dramas consistently outperforms others in that genre due to carefully cultivated programming strategies.

The book examines the historical evolution of television, from early broadcasting to the age of streaming and on-demand content, explaining how shifts in technology and consumer behavior have transformed the competitive landscape. It analyzes the strategic competition between networks, the resultant impact on programming decisions, and the dynamics of genre dominance.

Case studies of network rivalries and analyses of major networks in key genres, such as sitcoms and reality television, are provided. This approach offers valuable insights for media professionals and curious viewers alike, providing a comprehensive understanding of the television business.

The book progresses logically, beginning with fundamental concepts of network competition and concluding with an assessment of the long-term implications of these competitive dynamics on diversity, creativity, and overall content quality. It combines business analysis with creative insights, offering a nuanced perspective on the complex interplay of forces shaping the programming landscape and what makes one network standout from another.

Most rock ’n’ roll books are a bore. They all have the same narrative arc and are aimed at the dwindling following that now follows an artist that has long passed their AARP date.

Sound N’ Fury does not have a story arc. It is a collection of anecdotes, like a record comprised of various tracks — each one has its point and purpose. Alan Niven, who guided Guns N’ Roses from the gutter of Los Angeles to Wembley Stadium, shares stories from his remarkable life as a manager with an immediacy delivered by an extraordinary recall of dialogue. Readers will encounter not just Guns N’ Roses (who have sold almost 10 million tickets to their shows) but The Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Clarence Clemons, Whitesnake, Elton John, and others who came from humble origins and experienced fame known only to few. Small-town minds collided with worldwide adulation, expectations, and demands. The results are amusing, affirming, and, predictably, disastrous. Keep in mind that rock ’n’ roll is God’s occupation for the unemployable.

Written with a crisp and fluid style, the magnificence and idiocy of the music world will dance off the pages and engross even those who are not rock fans.

Albert Henry Woolson (February 11, 1850 - August 2, 1956) was the last known surviving member of the Union Army who served in the American Civil War; he was also the last surviving Civil War veteran on either side whose status is undisputed. Woolson was born in Antwerp, New York, in Jefferson County. His father, Willard Woolson, who enlisted in the Union Army, was wounded at the Battle of Shiloh and later transported to an Army hospital in Windom, Minnesota, where he would die of his wounds. Albert and his mother moved to Windom to accompany his father. Soon after, Albert enlisted as a drummer boy in Company C, 1st Minnesota Heavy Artillery Regiment on October 10, 1864. However, the company never saw action, and Albert Woolson was discharged on September 7, 1865. Woolson returned to Minnesota, where he lived the rest of his life as a carpenter and, later, as a member of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.), a powerful political organization made up of Civil War veterans where he became Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief in 1953. The following interview was recorded in 1954.

"Go for the Jaws, stay for the Shaws." —Nat Segaloff, author of The Exorcist Legacy

Robert Shaw unforgettably commanded attention as the weathered seaman Captain Quint in the blockbuster sensation, Jaws. But what came before and after that landmark film is as dramatic as the hunt for the great white shark itself.

Capturing the many facets of the vibrant, generous, and sometimes polarizing man is his nephew, Christopher, who explores the forces that shaped a dynamic personality—including Robert's indomitable mother, his deeply troubled father, and his activist sister, Joanna, with whom Robert shared an unbreakable bond. Out of the traumatic events of their childhood in the Orkney Islands and Cornwall, Mrs. Shaw pushed her children to pursue their dreams. For Robert, that dream was acting and writing.

Despite a storied career on the British and American stage—as both performer and playwright—and a string of hit films including From Russia with Love, A Man for All Seasons, The Sting, and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three, international celebrity eluded Robert . . . until he was summoned to star in "a little horror film" called Jaws.
