Summary
DESCRIPTION: First day of my freshman year at college, and my English Lit professor nails me for falling asleep in his class. Calling me into his office afterward, he asks me if everything is okay in my life. He shouldn't have because the floodgates opened and I poured my heart out to him. One thing led to another and...and, well, I'll let you find out what happens. EXCERPT: I heard the knock on my office door and hoped to high heaven it was Rebecca. “Come in.” “Sir, I finished my paper. It’s rough. Really rough, but it’s my truth.” “Sit down, Miss Mallory, while I read it. Do you have the time to spare?” “Of course. Please, go on and read it.” I read the words and felt them like a punch in the gut. She was so honest, even to the point of self flagellation for any part she played in her current relationship. It was gut wrenching. “Miss Mallory, I have to say this is the most honest piece of work I have ever witnessed. Kudos for chasing your demons in such a way.” “Thank you, sir. But where does it leave me? I mean, it felt good to purge in such a manner but it ultimately leaves me empty with no path forward.” “Where would you like to go? What path would you like to take?” “Sir, I cringed when I thought about how I am possibly a lousy lover for having only been with Brad. He was my first and only.” “My dear, you worked with what you had at the time. It means nothing. Your next lover may be more experienced and may take you to heights of wonder in bed. Don’t fret about it. The most important thing is to attend class and do your very best. Graduate with honors and move on from there.” “I have to wait that long?” she whined. We both laughed and it eased the tension. When we stopped laughing, we merely sat staring at each other. Too much time passed for Rebecca to be comfortable so she blurted out the first thing that came to mind. “I need a teacher. I need someone to show me what I never even knew I wanted.” Silence.
