Sinopsis

Edinburgh Enlightenment Minds explores the remarkable intellectual flourishing that occurred in 18th-century Edinburgh, arguing that the Scottish Enlightenment was pivotal in shaping modern thought. It examines key figures like David Hume, Adam Smith, and Joseph Black, whose groundbreaking ideas laid the foundations for modern economics, social sciences, and scientific inquiry. This book reveals how their contributions challenged fundamental assumptions about human nature and the world, fostering an environment of innovation.

The book uniquely emphasizes the interdisciplinary connections within the Scottish Enlightenment, exploring the relationships between philosophy, economics, and science. For instance, Adam Smith's concepts of the "invisible hand" and free markets emerged from a deep understanding of moral philosophy. It begins by introducing key figures and their core ideas within their historical context. The book then progresses through major sections on moral philosophy, economics, and scientific advancements, culminating in an exploration of the Scottish Enlightenment's enduring legacy.

This intellectual history provides a comprehensive overview of a crucial period, demonstrating the lasting relevance of these 18th-century ideas to contemporary challenges. By focusing on the unique combination of factors that nurtured intellectual activity in Edinburgh, Edinburgh Enlightenment Minds provides valuable insights for students, scholars, and anyone interested in the history of ideas.

In 2006 the American Embassy in Lithuania received the following cable from the then Lithuanian prime minister, Albinas Januska. He stated that "a group of UFOs are making their influence from the Cosmos" and that "there exists a decreasing group of persons, who are trying to rationally analyse the situation and objectively evaluate what is happening."

In 2007 the Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, Nobutaka Machimura said "I am sure that unidentified flying objects exist."

A former NASA astronaut, Dr. Brian O'Leary stated that "there is abundant evidence that we are being contacted, that civilizations have been visiting us for a very long time. That their appearance is bizarre from any type of traditional materialistic western point of view. That these visitors use the technologies of consciousness, they use toroids, they use co-rotating magnetic disks for their propulsion systems, that seems to be a common denominator of the UFO phenomenon.”

Nazi Germany, June 1943, Buchenwald concentration camp. The last place you'd expect to find any form of justice. And yet justice against the SS men who brutalised the prisoners here would be attempted by the unlikeliest of sources – SS officer Konrad Morgen.
Nazi Germany, despite the atrocities it carried out on an industrial scale, still had legislation and a legal system, and Morgen used these laws to bring individual members of the SS to justice for their crimes. He was a fearless investigating judge and police official, and when he crossed swords with more powerful forces inside the SS, he was demoted and sent by Heinrich Himmler himself to the Eastern Front as an ordinary soldier in the Waffen SS.
But Morgen's skills were still required and he returned to launch a series of criminal investigations in various concentration camps, including Buchenwald. As a direct result of his work, two concentration camp commandants were shot before the end of the war and he arrested three others. Targets of his investigations included Adolf Eichmann, one of the architects of the Holocaust, and Rudolf Höss, the infamous commandant of Auschwitz.
Described by historian John Toland as 'the man who did the most to hinder the atrocities in the East', Konrad Morgen pursued Nazi Germany's worst murderers from inside the SS. This is his incredible true story.

The Hidden Face of Pope Francis

Why did Pope Francis canonize a priest responsible for the genocide of the Indians?
Why does he wish to beatify the anti-Semitic French priest, Leon Dehon?
What are the unmentionable reasons for his papal election?
Pope Francis is presented as progressive and sensitive to the interests of the people, but underneath his smiles and his good words hides an authoritarian and dogmatic pope. This pope relies on very conservative movements such as Communion and Liberation or the Order of the Knights of Columbus, which are close to Opus Dei.
The good Pope Francis is beginning to drop his mask when he declares that Europe is undergoing a new Arab invasion (sic), when he calls on "Catholics with a sense of identity" to take to the streets, when he fights against republican secularism and demonizes atheists.
After an overview of the financial, political and sexual scandals, Paul Ariès proceeds to a very detailed and documented analysis of the "Church of Francis," particularly in the areas of ecology and sexuality. This clear book offers a surprising insight into the best communicator the Church has known in a long time.
