    The Mere Exposure Effect -...

The Mere Exposure Effect is a psychological phenomenon where repeated exposure to a stimulus leads to an increased preference for that stimulus. This effect occurs without any active engagement or deep processing from the individual. Simply put, the more we encounter something, the more likely we are to develop a liking for it, even if we don’t consciously realize why. This effect can apply to a wide range of stimuli, from people and objects to sounds, images, and even ideas. The central principle behind this concept is that familiarity breeds fondness.
First identified by psychologist Robert Zajonc in the 1960s, the Mere Exposure Effect has become a cornerstone of psychological research, illustrating the powerful impact that repeated exposure can have on human preferences. Zajonc’s studies showed that individuals tend to rate unfamiliar stimuli more favorably after repeated presentations, even when they are not consciously aware of the exposure. His work demonstrated that this preference for familiar stimuli occurs across various domains, from simple shapes to more complex social contexts.
The Mere Exposure Effect is often seen in everyday life. For example, we might find ourselves gravitating toward a particular song after hearing it multiple times on the radio, even if we initially didn’t like it. Similarly, we may develop stronger connections to people we encounter frequently, whether in our personal lives or in the workplace. This effect also plays a crucial role in the success of advertising campaigns, where repeated exposure to a brand or product can significantly influence consumer behavior, often leading to a preference for those products.

The definitive account of the Dalton Gang and the most brazen bank heist in history, by the multiple New York Times bestselling author. The Last Outlaws is the thrilling true story of the last of one of the greatest outlaw gang. The dreaded Dalton Gang consisted of three brothers and their rotating cast of colorful accomplices who saw themselves as descended from the legendary James brothers. They soon became legends themselves, beginning their career as common horse thieves before graduating to robbing banks and trains. On October 5, 1892, the Dalton Gang attempted their boldest and bloodiest raid yet: robbing two banks in broad daylight in Coffeyville, Kansas, simultaneously. As Grat, Bob, and Emmett Dalton and Bill Power and Dick Broadwell crossed the plaza to enter the two buildings, the outlaws were recognized by townspeople, who raised the alarm. Citizens armed themselves with shotguns and six-shooters from nearby hardware stores and were locked and loaded when the thieves emerged from the banks. The ensuing gun battle was a lead-filled firefight of epic proportions. As the smoke cleared, eight men lay dead––including four of the five members of the doomed Dalton Gang. For the first time ever, the full story of the Dalton Gang's life of crime, culminating in one of the Wild West’s most violent events, are chronicled in detail––a last gruesome gasp of the age of gunfights.A Macmillan Audio production from St. Martin’s Press.

In January 1993, the Australian government sent just under one thousand young men and women to serve under American command in a violent, impoverished, starving society. Most males over the age of twelve either carried or had access to a gun, and most Somali men had been fighting a vicious civil war for years.
Australian soldiers and their teams had to gain control of the streets of Baidoa and surrounding towns. This contest was not ‘find, fight and kill’ warfare. There was no decisive victory or defeat. The aim was to detect ‘the bad boys’ and deter and de-escalate their violence rather than escalate hostilities to success through ‘body count’. This mode of operation was not community policing by soldiers either. It involved adjusting attitudes forcefully and assuring uncomfortable consequences for bad behaviour and ultimately lethal responses to armed challenges.

The world looked over their shoulders. Corporals and diggers had to make split-second decisions to open or hold fire. Holding fire when provoked by punks constituted disciplined professional performance. Opening fire before understanding the situation, especially against unarmed provocateurs, constituted unprofessional conduct and possible condemnation, even criminal charges. These young Australians carried the international reputation of Australia and its army on their shoulders. Their actions would either enhance that reputation or create controversy, negative publicity and, potentially, international embarrassment and condemnation.

After adjusting their own attitudes to balance aggression and compassion, fight leaders and their diggers forcefully adjusted Somali attitudes, secured a stalemate, and then took control for the time they were in Somalia Australian soldiers individually and collectively helped a traumatised society needing a ‘fair go’ and gave ordinary Somali men, women and children trying to survive a little bit of hope.
