Summary

In "History of Rome," Oliver Goldsmith presents a sweeping narrative that chronicles the rise and fall of one of history's greatest empires. Blending accessible prose with a rich tapestry of historical detail, Goldsmith employs a style that is both engaging and informative, reflecting the Enlightenment's spirit of inquiry and reason. His meticulous examination of Roman governance, culture, and society is interspersed with critical reflections that invite readers to contemplate the lessons of history. The book positions itself within a broader literary context, where the fascination with antiquity and the search for moral lessons in past civilizations flourished, marking Goldsmith as a pivotal figure in the transition from classical historiography to a more popular historical narrative. Oliver Goldsmith, an accomplished Irish writer and a contemporary of renowned figures such as Samuel Johnson, possessed a deep curiosity about human nature and society, themes that resonate throughout his work. His diverse background'Äîranging from poetry to playwriting'Äîimbued his historiographical approach with both creativity and critical insight. It is this multifaceted perspective that informed Goldsmith's desire to both educate and entertain his readers about Rome's enduring significance. For readers keen on understanding the foundational pillars of Western civilization, "History of Rome" is an indispensable resource. Goldsmith's ability to elucidate complex historical events through a vivid narrative enables both casual readers and scholars to gain profound insights. This book not only educates but also enriches the reader'Äôs appreciation of history's intricate tapestry, making it a worthwhile addition to any literary collection.

In the process of becoming one of the most famous Americans of her era, Susan B. Anthony’s legacy has overshadowed many of her contemporaries who were also active in the fight for civil rights. Among them, few led as interesting or progressive a life as Dr. Mary Edwards Walker, who grew up in a family that encouraged every kind of pursuit for girls and provided an educational foundation that would propel Walker in many fields. In addition to becoming a surgeon, Walker and her family eschewed conventional dress styles in favor of being comfortable, doing so in an era that ensured she would be ridiculed for it. Undeterred, Walker’s work took her across enemy lines during the Civil War, leading to her arrest in the South and to her recognition as one of only eight civilians in American history to be awarded the Medal of Honor for rendering "valuable service to the Government, and her efforts have been earnest and untiring in a variety of ways."
Although her legacy has not endured quite as much as some of the other activists who fought for civil rights in the late 19th century, she has been remembered and celebrated in the past few decades, including the unveiling of a giant statue of her in her hometown of Oswego, New York. She has also been commemorated with a stamp, and in the near future, a U.S. Army fort may be named after her in recognition of her service during the Civil War.

How you—and your church community—can play a part in ending racism.
Pastors John Siebeling and Wayne Francis—whose thriving congregations are the embodiment of diversity—have pooled their insights and experiences to help others have conversations about racism. Many churches and leaders have sought their counsel, hoping to emulate their success, and yours can too.
God and Race provides a non-threatening means for pastors, church leaders, and churchgoers to speak to each other about this difficult and pervasive problem. In this audio study, Wayne and John show how neither black fists nor white knuckles are the answer to the problem, but that what is needed are open hands, open hearts, and open minds. Together, they:Examine the White-Black tension from both perspectives.Answer all the uncomfortable questions we're afraid to ask—regarding ourselves, our families, our work and relationships, and the church.Discuss seven key statements that they believe the church needs to acknowledge today—including that racism is a real problem, that it's more than just a spiritual issue, and that the Gospel is the solution.Provide practical steps anyone can take to become part of the solution.
In the Gospels, we see how the crowds came to Jesus because he talked about real issues and was not afraid to engage in the important issues of his day. In the church of today, we need to be doing the same: only by recognizing, addressing, and openly dialoguing about the racial tension in America can we begin to work toward real solutions together.

This book contains these philosophical topics:
    - Feminist Philosophy: Feminist philosophy has emerged as a critical lens for understanding and deconstructing gender roles, power structures, and the ways in which societal norms shape individual identities. At its core, feminist philosophy challenges traditional, patriarchal systems that often position women and marginalized genders as secondary to men. It is not merely a critique of these systems but an exploration of alternative ways of thinking about power, justice, and equality. Feminist philosophers have sought to unravel the deep-rooted assumptions about gender, questioning how these assumptions limit the full potential of individuals and societies.
    - Political Philosophy: Political philosophy plays a central role in the development of societies, offering profound insights into the principles and ideas that shape governance and human relations. At its core, political philosophy seeks to understand the fundamental questions of power, authority, justice, and the rights of individuals within a collective. By examining these issues, political philosophy provides a framework for interpreting and evaluating the structures that govern our lives, from the most intimate social arrangements to the global political order. It is through political philosophy that we come to grips with the nature of justice, equality, freedom, and the role of the state in promoting the common good.
