Sinopse

An NPR Books Great Read: Two never-before-published stories from the archives of one of science fiction’s all-time masters. The novella “A Necessary Being” showcases Octavia E. Butler’s ability to create alien yet fully believable “others.” Tahneh’s father was a Hao, one of a dwindling race whose leadership abilities render them so valuable that their members are captured and forced to govern. When her father dies, Tahneh steps into his place, both chief and prisoner, and for twenty years has ruled without ever meeting another of her kind. She bears her loneliness privately until the day that a Hao youth is spotted wandering into her territory. As her warriors sharpen their weapons, Tahneh must choose between imprisoning the newcomer—and living the rest of her life alone. The second story in this volume, “Childfinder,” was commissioned by Harlan Ellison for his legendary (and never-published) anthology The Last Dangerous Visions™. A disaffected telepath connects with a young girl in a desperate attempt to help her harness her growing powers. But in the richly evocative fiction of Octavia E. Butler, mentorship is a rocky path, and every lesson comes at a price. The award-winning author of science fiction classics Parable of the Sower and Kindred bestows these compelling, long lost gems “like the miraculous discovery that the beloved book you’ve read a dozen times has an extra chapter” (Los Angeles Review of Books). Yes there is Anti-Matter, too much in fact, and there’s a little bit of it everywhere. Anti-Matter the opposite type of matter that we know and use every day. Whenever Anti-Matter comes into contact with the normal matter that is part of us all, it annihilates all probability of the continued path we’re on and sends us down an alternative path. I also believe that right now, we here on the Earth are traveling through a hugely unusual cloud of this stuff. How do I know that? Because, everything going on in our evolution is an ‘opposite’ reality. We should be enjoying the greatest brotherhood of mankind ever, with Love and Peace and prosperity being proclaimed everywhere. Instead, we’re killing each other in record numbers. Hate fills the media. Governments have all failed us. Discord and chaos rule us. Some say that the human race is headed for extinction pretty soon. And, it is my theory that we went off into this anti-matter induced, alternate universe when John Kennedy was assassinated and Lyndon Johnson became the President, who decided to go and slaughter millions of innocent people in Viet Nam and then Richard (Tricky Dick) Nixon became President and he expanded the war into Cambodia and neither of these men went to jail. This was the start of the Bizarro Universe for me. I noticed the moment we went down this evil path because the Beatles were pulling us all in the right direction, but the Gravity of these evil minds led us down the wrong path. There’s a book about this theory, a great Science Fiction story that everyone must read or listen to. Don't let Antimatter let you down any longer.

The name’s John Taylor. I work the garish streets of the Nightside—the hidden heart of London where it's always three A.M., where inhuman creatures and otherworldly gods walk side by side in the endless darkness of the soul.I have a talent for finding things. People . . . property . . . no problem. But now I'm after something different.A local diva called the Nightingale has cut herself off from her family and friends, and I've been hired to find out the reason. I'm also wondering why her suicide—prone fans think she has a voice to die for. Literally. To get the truth, I'll have to lend an ear to the most enticingly beautiful and deadly voice in all of the Nightside—and survive.

The Woodlanders is one of Hardy's later novels, although he originally intended it as a successor to Far From The Madding Crowd. It concerns the life and loves of Giles Winterborne, Grace Melbury, Edred Fitzpiers, Felice Charmond and Marty South. The topics of class, fidelity and loyalty are dealt with in Hardy's exquisite style and set in the beautiful woodlands of Hintock (T.Hynes)
