Sinopsis

Termite Kings explores the fascinating world of termites, showcasing their remarkable abilities as ecosystem engineers and master builders. The book investigates how these seemingly simple insects create complex architectural marvels, such as towering mounds, that rival human constructions.

Termite colonies exhibit swarm intelligence and collective behavior, constructing elaborate ventilation systems and strategically placing soil and saliva to regulate their environments. The book emphasizes that termite mounds are not just shelters but intricate ecosystems supporting diverse organisms, profoundly influencing soil composition and nutrient cycling.

The book progresses from termite biology and social organization to the mechanics of termite architecture. It examines the ecological significance of termite mounds and symbiotic relationships with other organisms. By dissecting termite construction techniques and analyzing colony dynamics, Termite Kings draws interdisciplinary connections, exploring bio-inspired design in engineering and swarm intelligence in robotics. Each chapter builds upon the last, offering a comprehensive view of termite behavior and its implications for various fields of study.

Winner of the 2020 National Outdoor Book Award for Outdoor Classic!

In this coming-of-middle-age memoir, Kim Heacox, writing in the tradition of Abbey, McPhee, and Thoreau, discovers an Alaska reborn from beneath a massive glacier, where flowers emerge from boulders, moose swim fjords, and bears cross crevasses with Homeric resolve. In such a place Heacox finds that people are reborn too, and their lives begin anew with incredible journeys, epiphanies, and successes. All in an America free of crass commercialism and overdevelopment.

Braided through the larger story are tales of gold prospectors and the cabin they built sixty years ago; John Muir and his intrepid terrier, Stickeen; and a dynamic geology professor who teaches earth science "as if every day were a geological epoch."

Nearly two million people come to Alaska every summer, some on large cruise ships, some in single kayaks—all in search of the last great wilderness, the Africa of America. It is exactly the America Heacox finds in this story of paradox, love, and loss.

Following Caesar - From Rome to...

In 66 BC, young, ambitious Julius Caesar, seeking recognition and authority, became the curator of the Via Appia. He borrowed significant sums to restore the ancient highway. It was a way to curry favor from Roman citizens in villages along the route, built from Rome to Brindisi between 312-191 BC. After achieving greatness in Rome and the far reaches of Gaul, he led armies along this road to battle enemies in Roman civil wars. And then, across the Adriatic Sea, he joined Via Appia's sister road, the Via Egnatia that began in today's Albania. Other armies followed these two roads that eventually connected Rome to Byzantium, today's Istanbul. In the early second century AD, the emperor Trajan charted a new coastal route between Benevento and Brindisi, later called the Via Traiana.

Today, short stretches of the original three roads can be seen in the ruins of ancient Roman cities, now preserved as archaeological wonders, and through the countryside near, and sometimes under, modern highways. Following those routes is the purpose of treading along the path that Caesar and so many others took over the early centuries. Modern eyes, seeing through the mists of more than two thousand years of history, lead the traveler along these three roads coursing through six countries between Rome and Istanbul.
