Are you a Student of Literature, a New Author, or considering taking a Masters Level course in Creative Writing?
Do you know what constitutes good fiction, why some fiction is perceived to be better than others, why some novels end up in print while others don't?
Waymarks for Authors provides an unbiased and practical overview of writing and selling fiction today - the whole caboodle. With myth-busting simplicity, it exposes the forces that truly drive the fiction market. For the aspiring author it provides over eighty signposts towards the ultimate goal of publication, reveals the true scope of the undertaking, and poses thought-provoking questions for those who think they know the meaning of a good book.
The unpretentious style betrays a deep insight into the world of fiction and a broad knowledge-base, accumulated over many years as both a writer and tutor of fiction. Some writers are inherently better than others, but in the world of publishing, success isn’t confined to the talented, and talent doesn’t guarantee success.
A love of writing is a good start, though. We’re usually better at the things we love. But only when the art and craft of writing combine to become second nature, will that great novel materialise.
The author has been a writing tutor for many years, has served on the committee of a national writing organisation. She has a B.Ed. and an MA in Creative Writing. She has several mainstream novels published, enjoys reading good fiction in many genres, and has a great respect for fiction writers who go that extra mile to produce a well-crafted product.
There are many good books on writing, but this is clearly the place to start.

Gus Van Sant’s film and the ’90s cult of the alternative Gus Van Sant’s 1991 indie darling My Own Private Idaho perplexed and provoked, inspiring a new ethos for a new decade: being different was better than being good. Gentlemen of the Shade examines how the film was a coming-of-age for a generation of young people who would embrace the alternative and bring their outsider perspectives to sustainability, technology, gender constructs, and social responsibility. My Own Private Idaho ― fragmented and saturated with colour and dirt and a painfully beautiful masculinity ― also crept into popular media, and its influence can still be traced. R.E.M. Portlandia. Hipsterism. James Franco. Referencing the often-funny and sometimes-tragic cultural touchstones of the past 26 years, Gentlemen of the Shade sets the film as social bellwether for the many outsiders who were looking to join the right, or any, revolution.
