Sinopsis

Winner of IASPM Book Prize, given by IASPM, 2023Winner of the Bruno Nettl Prize, given by the Society for Ethnomusicology, 2023Joint-Winner of the Ruth Stone Prize (with Jessica Perrea), given by the Society for Ethnomusicology, 2023This book is an ethnographic study of sound archives and the processes of creative decolonization that form alternative modes of archiving and curating in the 21st century. It explores the histories and afterlives of sound collections and practices at the International Library of African Music. Sound Fragments follows what happens when a colonial sound archive is repurposed and reimagined by local artists in post-apartheid South Africa. The narrative speaks to larger issues in sound studies, curatorial practices, and the reciprocity and ethics of listening to and reclaiming culture. Sound Fragments interrogates how Xhosa arts activism contributes to an expanding notion of what a sound or cultural archive could be, and where it may resonate now and in future.

First Bull Run: The History of...

After the Battle of Fort Sumter in April 1861 ignited the Civil War, many in the North expected a relatively quick victory, including President Abraham Lincoln. While that seems naïve in hindsight, given the knowledge that the war lasted over four years, these expectations seemed entirely realistic at the time due to the Union’s overwhelming economic advantages over the South. At the start of the war, the Union had a population of over 22 million, whereas the South had a population of 9 million, nearly 4 million of whom were slaves. Union states contained 90% of the manufacturing capacity of the country and 97% of the weapon manufacturing capacity. Union states also possessed over 70% of the total railroads in the pre-war United States at the start of the war, and the Union also controlled 80% of the shipbuilding capacity of the pre-war United States.
McDowell’s strategy during the First Battle of Bull Run was grand, and in many ways it was the forerunner of a tactic Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson and James Longstreet executed brilliantly on nearly the same field during the Second Battle of Bull Run in August 1862. McDowell’s plan called for parts of his army to pin down General P.G.T. Beauregard’s Confederate soldiers in front while marching another wing of his army around the flank and into the enemy’s rear, rolling up the line. McDowell assumed the Confederates would be forced to abandon Manassas Junction and fall back to the next defensible line, the Rappahannock River. In July 1861, however, this proved far too difficult for his inexperienced troops to carry out effectively.
As the first major land battle of the Civil War, the First Battle of Bull Run made history in several ways. The two sides fought near the railroad junction at Manassas on July 21, 1861, just 25 miles away from Washington, which was close enough for many civilians from the nation’s capital to come and watch what they expected to be a rout of Confederate forces.

The interaction between Greek, Roman, and Egyptian civilizations represents one of the most dynamic periods of cultural blending in ancient history. As neighboring powers came into contact through trade, diplomacy, and conquest, their customs, ideas, and beliefs began to intertwine, giving rise to a unique fusion that would leave a lasting imprint on Egyptian society. This chapter explores how these cultural exchanges began and how they shaped Egypt during the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
The initial encounter between Egypt and the Greeks occurred long before Alexander the Great’s arrival, through trade across the Mediterranean. However, it was Alexander’s conquest of Egypt in 332 BCE that marked a significant turning point. His establishment of the city of Alexandria set the stage for a new era, where Greek customs and governance took root alongside ancient Egyptian traditions. The subsequent Ptolemaic dynasty, descended from one of Alexander’s generals, became a bridge between Greek and Egyptian worlds, adopting pharaonic symbols while introducing Hellenistic art, language, and administrative systems.
Cultural transmission was not solely the result of conquest—it also flourished through everyday interactions. Greek settlers in Egypt brought with them their language, religion, and lifestyle, but they also adapted to local customs, often integrating Egyptian deities and rituals into their own belief systems. Temples began to reflect a blend of architectural styles, and literature began to emerge in both Greek and Demotic scripts, reflecting a hybrid intellectual life.

The book "Duron Vekhe Sant Jarnail Singh Ji Bhindranwale" is written by Prof. Harpal Singh Pannu. He mentions in the beginning that he wrote exactly what he saw with his own eyes. He says, "It felt like Sant Jarnail Singh was my friend." But Sant Jarnail Singh was not anyone’s friend—he was a saint. A saint has no enemies or friends. I saw him as a great Sikh whose role in the Akali Dal was growing.
