War may be rationalized as ‘diplomacy by other means’ but the reality is that when tribes, Nations and peoples bring themselves into armed conflict with one another mayhem, terror and slaughter are the result.
In the First World War, The Great War, The War to End all Wars any idealistic aims that it was a ‘just cause’ and would be all over in a few months were shattered against the vast scale of millions dead or wounded all for the often temporary gains of a few miles of shell-pocked mud. Human bodies were of little more value than the bullets and shells which mowed them down.
In this series of poetry volumes we look at the first world war from several viewpoints. From poets who died, often in battle, during its torturous years, to the women who write of war and its consequences as well as an anthology of those poets, some still of fame, and some now forgotten with only their words to bear witness for what they have experienced. Each has an individual point of view that bears its own truth.
For the poets who fought in this conflict their first hand accounts often came at a terrible and irrevocable price. In this volume we collect together the works of many poets who died during this tumultuous time. Whilst their lives were cut tragically short their words endure.
This volume comes to you from Portable Poetry, a specialized imprint from Deadtree Publishing. Our range is large and growing and covers single poets, themes, and many compilations.

Three magnetic personalities and three remarkable stories from the poetic imagination of Arinzé Kene, winner of the Most Promising Playwright Award at the 'Offies' (Off West End Theatre Awards).
Kehinde is older than his years, a boy with an innocence and a passion for mixed-race girls. Joanne is dipped in rudeness and rolled in attitude. And then there's Rugrat, the class clown, underachiever and playground loudmouth.
The boy who never leaves, the schoolgirl trying to distance herself from her past, and the schoolboy always on the outer of the inner circle – in this lyrical triptych of interconnected monologues, three inner-city teenagers are about to become adults.
Little Baby Jesus was first performed at Oval House Theatre, London, in May 2011 in a co-production by Oval House, BEcreative and the English Touring Theatre.
Little Baby Jesus is also available in the volume Little Baby Jesus and Estate Walls: Two plays.
'Utterly magnetic... genuinely original' - Time Out
'It's the writing that makes this and Kene worth watching. It fizzes and froths and sometimes squeaks with pure pleasure at its own delight in words and the poetry and rhythms of the streets. It has grace, too' - Guardian
    'Heart-warming, heart-breaking, poetic, layered, funny' - Whatsonstage.com
'Kene continues to peel back the cliches surrounding disenfranchised inner-city teenagers to reveal the characters behind the headlines' - The Stage

A charmingly offbeat, surreal comedy of knitting, penguins and Battenberg.
Stitch is hitting the gay scene of Hull. Or at least dipping his toe in the water, while staying with his heavily pregnant sister Liz and her shabby sofa-loving partner Mark. But why won't Stitch let anyone into the bathroom even though Liz is dying for a pee? And who is the man in the giant penguin costume?
Me, As a Penguin premiered at the Arcola Theatre, London, in 2010.
This volume also features two monologues by Tom Wells, About a Goth and Notes for First Time Astronauts.
'a remarkable piece of writing, wry, witty and surreal' —WhatsOnStage
    'thoroughly charming' —Time Out

Robin Morgan’s lyrical gifts are again on display in this limited edition of four of her most celebrated poems Prostituted women, pimps, Alice B. Toklas, and Bertha Mason—Edward Rochester’s mad first wife in Jane Eyre—all make appearances in a poem titled “Battery,” a word that, in Morgan’s hands, has surprising meanings. Affirmation underscores the perfect Shakespearian sonnet, “Birthright,” as it counsels a defiant gaze at life and death. The life of a flower and the process it undergoes to blossom is the subject of “Peony,” with an utterly fresh metaphor that widens to embrace the planet. And the title poem, with its witty play on words, rips through denial in all its forms to find hard but bracing truths.
