Sinopsis

In "The Steel Flea," Nikolai Leskov presents a masterful blend of folklore and realism, weaving a captivating narrative around the eccentric tale of a gifted Russian craftsman who conceives an extraordinary contraption: a steel flea that can leap a remarkable distance. Set against the backdrop of 19th-century Russia, the prose is imbued with vivid imagery and robust characterizations, reflecting Leskov's unique literary style that merges humor with moral introspection. With its exploration of technology and human ingenuity, the story serves not only as an engaging fable but also as a commentary on the broader social and cultural currents of its time, illuminating the tensions between tradition and progress in the rapidly modernizing landscape of Russia. Nikolai Leskov (1831-1895) was a prominent figure in Russian literature, renowned for his keen observations and intricate storytelling. His experiences as a provincial clerk and a soldier provided him with rich insights into the Russian psyche, which he skillfully translates into his writings. Leskov's background in a changing Russia informed his themes of craftsmanship and the human spirit, making his works resonate deeply with audiences. His familiarity with Russian folklore and societal norms enables him to craft narratives that both entertain and provoke thought. "The Steel Flea" is highly recommended for readers who appreciate literature that balances whimsical invention with poignant social commentary. Leskov's ability to juxtapose the marvelous with the mundane invites readers to reflect on the complexities of life and the transformative power of creativity. This tale not only enriches our understanding of Russian culture but also posits timeless questions about the interplay between art, technology, and humanity.

In When East Met West, W.C. Tuttle brings his signature blend of wit and Western action to the story of a polished Easterner who finds himself out of his element in the rugged frontier. When city manners collide with cowboy code, sparks—and laughter—fly. What starts as a culture clash becomes an unlikely alliance as both men confront local trouble, outlaws, and misunderstandings that can only be solved with grit, charm, and a whole lot of humor.
With Tuttle’s trademark storytelling and a keen eye for comic timing, this Western is both a tribute to and a light-hearted twist on the genre.

In the novel Who's Who When Everyone Is Someone Else, the character "C. D. Rose" (not to be confused with the author C. D. Rose) searches an unnamed middle-European city for the long-lost manuscript of a little-known writer named Maxim Guyavitch. That search was fruitless, but in The Blind Accordionist, "C. D. Rose" has found the manuscript—nine sparkling, fable-like short stories—and he presents them here with an (hilarious) introduction explaining the discovery, and an afterword providing (hilarious) critical commentary on the stories, and what they might reveal about the mysterious Guyavitch.

The Blind Accordionist is another masterful book of world-making by the real C. D. Rose, absorbing in its mix of intelligence and light-heartedness, and its ultimate celebration of literature itself. It is the third novel in the series about "C. D. Rose," although the reader does not need to have read the previous two books. (The first in the series was The Biographical Dictionary of Literary Failure; the second was Who's Who When Everyone Is Someone Else.)

Like those books, The Blind Accordionist can be read both as a simple but wonderful collection of quirky stories, and as comedy—or as a beautiful and moving elegy on the nobility of writers wanting to be read.

In a modest little tale for the season, Brother Hermitage heads for London.
William Duke of Normandy is to be crowned King of England on Christmas day 1066, and he expects presents.
For reasons beyond reason the monastery of De'Ath's Dingle is invited to the ceremony and the only ones who can be let out on their own are Brother Hermitage and Wat the Weaver.
But it will be a rush to get there. With only 7 days to travel over 100 miles, the pair must cross a frozen and largely lawless country if they are to make it to Westminster alive.
And then there's the problem of Wat's attitude towards gifts in principle. He doesn't mind a reasonable exchange but simply giving sounds like a very poor deal.
Perhaps the days of the journey will give Brother Hermitage the opportunity to breathe the spirit of the season into his weaving friend.
    Or perhaps not.

A delightfully subversive essay collection from Laci Mosley, host of the award-winning “Scam Goddess” podcast, about the frauds, cons, and schemes that make up our world—and how the scammer mindset has affected her own upbringing, career, friendships, love life, and more.  From an early age, comedian and actress Laci Mosley knew her path would be riddled with scams, cons, robberies, and frauds. Little ones. Ones that didn’t hurt people or get her in trouble. But ones that would get her where she needed to be. “You see,” she writes, “everyone’s a scammer and everything’s a scam. Some people are better at it than others, but we all do it. The system wasn’t built for people like me. Scamming saved me and has taught me how to navigate a messy and unfair world while looking out for myself, too.” In Scam Goddess, Laci recounts how her scammer instincts have guided her throughout her life—from a religious childhood in rural Texas, to a stint as a city bartender at what might have been a drug front, to swindling her way past the gatekeepers of Hollywood—recounting the greatest true-crime scam stories that inspired her along the way. Whether it’s by the beauty industry, capitalism, or the people we date, we’re all getting scammed. In this book, Laci identifies the secrets to flipping the script and coming out ahead.
