Sinopsis

'A copy should be on every desk not just in the Home Office, but throughout government. A brilliant and hugely timely book.' Caroline Lucas, author of Another England
What is it like to arrive on our shores with nothing and be pushed to the margins of society?
Who stands to gain from an asylum system that is intentionally hostile?
Anywhere But Here is a powerful exposé of Britain's broken asylum system and how it fails us all.

Each year tens of thousands of people risk their lives to cross the Channel in small boats hoping to find safety in Britain. Yet the very system designed to protect them has all but collapsed.

With unique and unparalleled access, award-winning journalist and former Home Office insider Nicola Kelly takes us behind the scenes of the small boats crisis for the first time.

We follow the under-resourced coastguard overseeing search and rescue operations in the Channel. The decision-makers hired from McDonald's and Aldi to conduct 'life and death' asylum interviews. The immigration barristers securing last-minute reprieves for deportees who narrowly escaped death. And we step inside the Home Office corridors as ministers and advisors respond to emerging crises and scandals, from Windrush to the Rwanda plan.

At its heart are the stories of war-torn arrivals, lone teenagers and trafficked women attempting to settle in cities, towns and villages across the UK. We travel to meet them, exploring where they have fled from and why, and the response of local communities to their new neighbours.

Situated on the beaches and the ports, in the hotels, the courtrooms and the detention centres where the futures of those affected unfold, this is a searing investigation into one of the most urgent issues and shocking injustices of our time

It’s a hard name to pronounce, but hey, it’s been the legend of Native American peoples for centuries.
Was it a man? Was it a god? Was it a white person? Or was it some animal or strange thing?
Quetzalcoatl is an Aztec divine being whose name originates from the Nahuatl language and meaning "valuable snake" or "Quetzal-feathered Snake."
"Quetzalcoatl, in its actual sense, means'snake of valuable plumes,' but in the allegorical sense, 'best of men,'" said Ixtlilxóchitl, a descendant of Aztec royalty and history expert of the Nahua people, in the 17th century.
Quetzalcoatl was related to gods of the wind, the world Venus, the early morning, merchants, and arts, crafts, and knowledge amongst the Aztecs, whose beliefs are the best recorded in historic sources.
He was also the Aztec priesthood's client god, and also the god of research study and knowledge.
In addition to the gods Tlaloc, Tezcatlipoca, and Huitzilopochtli, Quetzalcoatl was just one of the most considerable gods in the Aztec temple. Quetzalcoatl's ally Tlaloc (the divine being of rain) and Quetzalcoatl's twin and psychopomp, Xolotl, the dog-headed soul-guide for the dead, are 2 other gods represented by the world Venus.
Apart from that, many people in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are convinced that Quetzalcoatl was the name for Jesus, who, according to their record, the Book of Mormon, came to the American continent.
In this brief book, we will discuss all those convictions, myths, and background stories, so you can be informed and make up your own mind.

The Age of Enlightened Despotism was a period in European history during the 18th century when absolute monarchs, inspired by the ideas of the Enlightenment, sought to combine their centralized power with reforms aimed at improving the welfare of their subjects. These rulers, often referred to as "enlightened despots," were influenced by the rationalist philosophy that emphasized reason, science, and progress. However, they did not embrace the democratic principles of the Enlightenment, opting instead to preserve their absolute authority while implementing select reforms to improve governance, society, and the economy.
At the heart of enlightened despotism was the belief that monarchs could act as benevolent rulers who used their absolute power to guide their countries towards prosperity and progress. These monarchs saw themselves as enlightened figures, tasked with leading their nations in line with the principles of the Enlightenment but without relinquishing control over the state. In contrast to traditional autocratic rulers, enlightened despots were often receptive to new ideas about governance, education, legal systems, and the treatment of their subjects. They embraced reforms that were designed to modernize their societies, often implementing policies that reflected Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire, Montesquieu, and Rousseau.
Frederick the Great of Prussia, Catherine the Great of Russia, and Joseph II of Austria were the most prominent examples of enlightened despots. Each of these rulers used their power to implement a range of reforms. Frederick, for instance, was known for his military prowess and his efforts to modernize the Prussian state, introducing reforms that improved the legal system, promoted education, and supported religious tolerance.

The American Dream - A History...

The roots of the American Dream reach back to the earliest colonial settlements, when European settlers arrived with hopes of building a better life far from the constraints of their homelands. For many, the New World offered something previously unimaginable—land ownership, religious freedom, and the possibility of rising above the station into which they were born. These opportunities, though limited to a select group at the time, laid the foundation for the evolving idea that anyone could succeed through hard work and determination. In this fertile but dangerous land, ambition was a necessity, and the early colonists began to shape a cultural identity around individualism and perseverance.
As the colonies grew and developed, tensions with Britain intensified, giving rise to revolutionary ideas that would further fuel the American Dream. The rejection of monarchy and the assertion of natural rights became central to the vision of a new nation. The Revolution itself was not just a fight for independence but also a declaration that ordinary people had the right to govern themselves. The rhetoric of the time emphasized liberty, equality, and the pursuit of happiness—concepts that would become permanently embedded in the national consciousness. The struggle to gain freedom was brutal and uneven, but the ideals expressed during this time continued to inspire generations to believe in the possibility of social mobility and personal fulfillment.
One of the most significant documents in American history, the Declaration of Independence, formalized the promise of the American Dream. Its bold claim that "all men are created equal" introduced a national aspiration that transcended the immediate political conflict. Although in practice this equality was far from realized, the statement set a powerful ideal against which future Americans would measure their progress.
