Summary

"I'm a connoisseur of the unwanted; a sommelier of deformity; a coveter of the unloved. I am forever chased by the shadow of my ugliness. In darkness, no shadow remains, and it's all diamonds."

Buddy Hayes is an ugly, defiant little man, a would-be Don Juan trapped in Quasimodo's body. He lives with his mother and ailing grandfather in a decaying, post-industrial city. The mother is Emily Post with a color changing and a mood-indicating scar. The grandfather is a one-eyed double amputee, who spends his days happily dangling in a hydraulic patient lift. Their life is a working-class hallucination of blueblood extravagance. They luxuriate over gourmet meals and perform dramatic readings. At night, Buddy slips away for covert liaisons with women he meets on the internet. Buddy is at war with his neighbor over a stolen book. There are frequent outrageous acts of casual sex. There's a love interest, a librarian, who tempts Buddy with desires for the "normal" kind of love he knows he cannot have. So it goes, until a new nurse arrives to care for Buddy’s grandfather. Enter Terrance: a tall, impossibly handsome black man, a lapsed Broadway performer, virtuoso singer, and banjo player. Buddy and Terrance strike up an unlikely friendship that drives Yetto's surreal, tawdry, and poignant debut novel.

Felicia Scalding is a still-recognizable 1990s ex-popstar who is in a state of mental and financial desperation. Hard working, street smart and intelligent, but flawed. Gripped by a gambling addiction, and keen to rediscover the limelight after becoming the subject of a viral dance meme, she accepts a chance offer to resurrect her fame & fortune as a judge on TV talent show, QuickFame.
QuickFame tracks her desperate to rebuild her life and career, lost through betrayal and addiction by secretly directing a manufactured boyband through the competition.
Being on the TV talent show reveals ambitions and secrets of each of the members of the boy band, #Five, led by genderqueer heartthrob Layton Coy, as well as memorable QuickFame contestants and their entourages. In a piggybacking of fortunes, others begin to hitch their stars to Felicia, while she, in turn, parasitically attaches herself to the seemly misdirected but talented boyband. This ensemble’s fortunes are intertwined for career and coin in the pursuit of their own fifteen minutes of fame.

Crome Yellow, published in 1921 was Aldous Huxley’s first novel. In it he satirizes the fads and fashions of the time. It is the witty story of a house party at ‘Crome’ where there is a gathering of bright young things. We hear some of the history of the house from Henry Wimbush, its owner and self appointed historian; Apocylapse is prophesied, virginity is lost, and inspirational aphorisms are gained in a trance. Our hero, Denis, tries to capture it all in poetry and is disappointed in love.
The author, Aldous Huxley, was born in 1894 and began writing poetry and short stories in his early twenties; this was his first novel and established his literary reputation. (Summary by Martin Clifton)
