Summary

From a dancing automaton running amok at a ball, to a prehistoric beast lurking in the depths of a Yorkshire cave, this anthology explores the nature of the 'old weird', and unordinary stories which go outside the boundaries of everyday life.
The anthology includes not only stories by well-known writers like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Jerome K. Jerome, but also by long-forgotten authors such as D. F. Hannigan and Reginald Bacchus. Focusing on the idea and history of what can be classified as 'old weird', compared to the 'new weird', Rennison applies experience and knowledge of Victorian literary history to bring these supernatural tales to the surface.
Available since: 05/22/2025.

“[Ringwald's] stories ring with authenticity, voices so true and honest that we imagine she's been eavesdropping on our conversations.” ―Vanity FairTales of love, loss, and betrayal are at the heart of When It Happens to You, the debut story collection from actress and author Molly Ringwald.A Hollywood icon, Ringwald defined the teenage experience in the eighties in such classic films as Pretty in Pink, The Breakfast Club, and Sixteen Candles. She brings that same compelling candor she displayed in her film roles to the unforgettable characters she has created in this series of linked stories about the particular challenges, joys, and disappointments of adult relationships. Here are stories that grapple with infertility and infidelity, fame and familial discord, in a collection that will resonate broadly with readers.“A smart, emotionally sophisticated, intricately dovetailed novel of stories.” —Lauren Groff, author of Arcadia“Molly Ringwald understands how families work and uses her considerable talents to make them come alive on the page.” —Gary Shteyngart, author of Super Sad True Love Story“An impressive fiction debut.” —Robin Black, author of If I Loved You, I Would Tell You This“An inventive and compelling portrait of love in the modern age.” —J. Stories starring a sleuthing Scottish lawyer: “McKay’s command of plot, place and character makes these 16th century St Andrews-set mysteries a delight.” —The Scotsman A grisly murder. A vanishing corpse. A secret romance. A ghostly tale. An innocent accused. Set in the year of the Armada, 1588: A Calendar of Crime brings together five short stories featuring Hew Cullan. From the gruesome murder of a candlemaker to Spanish ghosts on Hallowmas, Shirley McKay delivers five gripping tales of mystery that will keep you reading long into the night. “A fascinating evocation of the everyday life of ordinary Scots in the 1500s as well as series of first-rate stories. Her use of language is a delight, the sinewy and expressive Scots words aiding the creation of Cullen's very realistic world. McKay is to be congratulated for the continued quality and inventiveness of her tales.” —The National

The guy in the dirty grey fedora looked like he might have come out of the Bellevue Morgue—off a slab. He was big and his jaw jutted over the edge of his upturned coat collar. His eyes shifted all over as if he was waiting for somebody to pick up any time.
His shoes were broken and the upper of one had gone rotten with wet. Each time he took a step it squelched. His fingers, inside his coat-pocket, were clasped round the butt of a .38 police Positive that had once been issued to a copper who got himself cited for bravery in the line of duty the day after they buried him.
He turned off Bowery at Kenmare. He was limping. He had a blister on his right foot where the shoe was broken. He hastened his steps with an effort. On Mott he saw the newsboy.
The limping guy looked around, and worked up slowly towards the boy.
The boy made a play of selling him a news-sheet. The limping guy took it. On the front page he could see his own picture, and across the top of the sheet was a banner caption—"Fremer Breaks Jail—Kills Two Guards."
    That was him!
This is a classic short story featuring Peter Cheyney’s popular detective Lemmy Caution.

Short stories have always been a sort of instant access into an author’s brain, their soul and heart. A few pages can lift our lives into locations, people and experiences with a sweep of landscape, narration, feelings and emotions that is difficult to achieve elsewhere.

In this series we try to offer up tried and trusted ‘Top Tens’ across many different themes and authors. But any anthology will immediately throw up the questions – Why that story? Why that author?

The theme itself will form the boundaries for our stories which range from well-known classics, newly told, to stories that modern times have overlooked but perfectly exemplify the theme. Throughout the volume our authors whether of instant recognition or new to you are all leviathans of literature.

Some you may disagree with but they will get you thinking; about our choices and about those you would have made. If this volume takes you on a path to discover more of these miniature masterpieces then we have all gained something.

Here, in this decade, the World War engulfs nations and cultures searching for a moral compass but finds more and others to exploit, Communist revolution brings great swathes of people to a new and illusory future. Writers sometimes chart these happenings or instead bring narratives and characters on other issues to the fore or some merely escape its traumas with escapist fare.>
