Bleeding Truth is a powerful and deeply personal memoir that bears witness to the collision of history, justice, and the human spirit. Written by Dr. Shahram Azam, a physician and former military doctor, this book is not only a testimony of lived experience but also a search for truth in the face of silence and denial.
The story unfolds against the backdrop of Iran’s turbulent political climate, where repression, censorship, and fear shaped the lives of countless citizens. At its heart lies the harrowing case of Zahra Kazemi, an Iranian-Canadian journalist who was arrested, tortured, and killed in Tehran in 2003. Dr. Azam, then a physician at Baghiyyatollah Hospital, became one of the first witnesses to the physical evidence of her brutal injuries. His professional duty—and his conscience—compelled him to record what he saw, a choice that would forever alter his own life.
Bleeding Truth weaves together the personal and the political: memories of war and service as a doctor on the front lines, the responsibility of treating the wounded with compassion, and the haunting reality of becoming a reluctant witness to state violence. It is a narrative of exile and resilience, as Dr. Azam recounts the cost of speaking out and the journey that took him from the operating room in Tehran to a life in Canada, where he continues to carry the weight of memory and moral obligation.
The memoir does more than revisit a single tragedy. It speaks to broader questions of truth, accountability, and the human need to confront injustice, even when doing so carries profound risks. It is both a personal confession and a universal call to remember, to resist forgetting, and to honor the lives silenced by oppression.

Joining the ranks of such acclaimed accounts as Manic, Brain on Fire, and Monkey Mind, a deeply personal, funny, and sometimes painful look at anxiety and its impact from writer and commentator Kat Kinsman.
Feeling anxious? Can’t sleep because your brain won’t stop recycling thoughts? Unable to make a decision because you're too afraid you’ll make the wrong one? You’re not alone.
In Hi, Anxiety, beloved food writer, editor, and commentator Kat Kinsman expands on the high profile pieces she wrote for CNN.com about depression, and its wicked cousin, anxiety. Taking us back to her adolescence, when she was diagnosed with depression at fourteen, Kat speaks eloquently with pathos and humor about her skin picking, hand flapping, “nervousness” that made her the recipient of many a harsh taunt. With her mother also gripped by depression and health issues throughout her life, Kat came to live in a constant state of unease—that she would fail, that she would never find love . . . that she would end up just like her mother.
Now, as a successful media personality, Kat still battles anxiety every day. That anxiety manifests in strange, and deeply personal ways. But as she found when she started to write about her struggles, Kat is not alone in feeling like the simple act of leaving the house, or getting a haircut can be crippling. And though periodic medication, counseling, a successful career and a happy marriage have brought her relief, the illness, because that is what anxiety is, remains.
Exploring how millions are affected anxiety, Hi, Anxiety is a clarion call for everyone—but especially women—struggling with this condition. Though she is a strong advocate for seeking medical intervention, Kinsman implores those suffering to come out of the shadows—to talk about their battle openly and honestly. With humor, bravery, and writing that brings bestsellers like Laurie Notaro and Jenny Lawson to mind, Hi, Anxiety tackles a difficult subject with amazing grace.

To know Sir Walter Scott as a man is as delightful and fruitful an experience as to appreciate the greatness of his books.

In the bicentenary year of the publication of Sir Walter Scott's first novel Waverley, this is a timely republication of John Buchan's biography of Scott - one great storyteller exploring the life of another.

Buchan's sympathetic treatment of Scott is perceptive, and his enthusiasm for Scott's work is infectious. Interspersed with superb extracts exhibiting Scott's storytelling skills, John Buchan's short introduction to Scott has never been bettered. To this day, he remains the ideal advocate and guide to the great Sir Walter Scott.

John Buchan is the very person to get us reading Scott again, abandoning the superficial media distractions for a grand rumbling rollercoaster of a read - ideal for a stage coach journey, an airport wait, or a holiday lived out of time.

FROM THE INTRODUCTION BY DONALD SMITH

The almost inspired literary criticism of Sir Walter Scott shows Buchan at his best.

Margaret Gabrielle Vere Campbell was born on 1st November 1885 on Hayling Island in Hampshire.

Her childhood was fraught with problems, her alcoholic father left early in her life and was later found dead on a London Street. Life thereafter was poverty with an uncaring mother.

However, her talents took her to the Slade School of Fine Art and later to study in Paris.

Her first fiction, written at a mere 16, was a violent medieval historical novel, ‘The Viper of Milan’. Initially rejected by several publishers it went on to become a best-seller

After this her prolific writings were the main financial support for the family. Her literary output numbered over 150 volumes, mainly under the pseudonym of Marjorie Bowen but she also used the names Joseph Shearing, George R Preedy, John Winch, Robert Paye and Margaret Campbell. Within this output she assigned the pseudonyms to the various genres she worked across, from Historical fiction to supernatural short stories.

Perhaps her best known work is the 1909 book ‘Black Magic’, a Gothic horror novel about a medieval witch.

Several of her works were also adapted into films.

She was married twice. The first to Zefferino Emilio Constanza (they had two children), who died of tuberculosis, and then to Arthur L Long (and another two children)

Marjorie Bowen died on 23rd December 1952 at St Charles Hospital in North Kensington, London after suffering serious concussion from a fall in her bedroom. She was 67.
