Summary

There are times in this life when a near-death experience causes a person to pause and look back over the years, to consider the moments that have meant the most in this life. For the author, these were the years spent answering the sirens-call to a life on the road, of leaving hearth-and-home to live out of a big rig and become part of the fabric of the trucking culture of this great land. Follow the author down the highways and byways of our country as he attempts to explain the unexplainable: just what it is that motivates a person to sell-out to a life spent in perpetual motion; to the never-ending pursuit of the white line as the years roll away beneath their wheels. Of grizzled veterans who have sold-out to the life amidst the loss of so much on the home front. Of a man who possesses two homes, his truck and a sailboat, who lives the life of a virtual hermit-in-plain-sight. Read of a man with the means to pursue any life he may desire yet has chosen to chase a fading sunset into the western sky in a dressed-out Western Star. There are the tales of storms fought, of danger survived, and the never-ending pursuit of the revenue necessary to keep the wheels in motion. But so much more than any of this, is the encounter each of these road-warriors has with the mistress called the highway. Of the sirens-call she sends out to the chosen few that will pull them away from a staid existence; from a warm bed, a steady nine-to-five, and a life that is predictable to an extreme these men and women find they can no longer abide. Come along for the ride, it will be worth your time. And listen if you will for the call-of-the-road. She might just be speaking your name!

This book details my once-in-a life experience in the Himalayan regions of Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, and Myanmar. In an effort to become more educated about the way of life of its peoples, I discovered that religion is such an important part of their everyday lives. Also, as the lands become more integrated into the mountains, the feeling of something spiritual becomes noticeable. Maybe it is the solitude, the peacefulness, or could it be that the Himalayas possess a certain mystique. My travels took me into the cities and congested streets where I mingled with the locals and learnt about their culture, the historical and important sacred temples that support the regions' religions, and the near isolation in the mountains. These Himalayan regions possess a certain magic that one cannot encounter or experience elsewhere in the World, and I am truly thankful for the opportunity I have been given to venture into these lands. Become enlightened. Chapters include: Kathmandu - Religion, Temples, Bars, Chaos and Pollution; Soul Searching and Trekking in Nepal, an unforeseen relationship; Keeping it sacred in Bhutan; The Road to Tibet; Like a Sudden Hope in the Dark Night of the Soul; Connecting the Dots

A revitalizing new perspective on Earthcare from Pulitzer Prize finalist William deBuys. In 2016 and 2018 acclaimed author and conservationist William deBuys joined extended medical expeditions into Upper Dolpo, a remote, ethnically Tibetan region of northwestern Nepal, to provide basic medical services to the residents of the region. Having written about climate change and species extinction, deBuys went on those journeys seeking solace. He needed to find a constructive way of living with the discouraging implications of what he had learned about the diminishing chances of reversing the damage humans have done to Earth; he sought a way of holding onto hope in the face of devastating loss. As deBuys describes these journeys through one of Earth's remotest regions, his writing celebrates the land's staggering natural beauty, and treats his listeners to deep dives into two scientific discoveries—the theories of natural selection and plate tectonics—that forever changed human understanding of our planet. Written in a vivid and nuanced style evocative of John McPhee or Peter Matthiessen, The Trail to Kanjiroba offers a surprising and revitalizing new way to think about Earthcare, one that may enable us to continue the difficult work that lies ahead.

LONGLISTED FOR THE WILLIAM HILL SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR PRIZE 2020
Sports books tend to detail extraordinary achievements, triumphs against the odds or commemorate World Cup winning captains.
This book does not do that.
For many, playing professional sport is the Dream Job. Few manage it, very few make it to the top and for the rest, life is very different. This is their story.
In Fringes, Ben Mercer invites you to witness life at the outer edges of professional rugby. This is a first hand account of what life is like as a journeyman professional athlete. You play, but to the wider public you don't exist. You earn but you don't drive a flash car. You sometimes pack out a stadium but sometimes, you play in a deserted park. This is the story for the majority of sports professionals. Only the minority taste the top, only one person gets to lift the cup or win the medal, only 15 get to play for England at any one time. For the rest, that’s not the case.
Ben Mercer is a former professional rugby player who after becoming disillusioned and uninspired plying his trade in the English Second Division, accepted an offer out of the blue to go to France and do something different - help an amateur team turn professional. This is a first hand account of what life is like in the lower reaches of professional sport - where your employment status is as precarious as your health and barely anyone will know your name.
If you've wanted to know what life is really like as a professional athlete, on the Fringes, away from the glitz and glamour of the international game then look no further.
