Sinopse

Artificial Beings explores the fascinating relationship between artificial intelligence as depicted in science fiction and the realities of scientific research. It examines how AI narratives in literature, film, and television both reflect and influence our understanding of AI's potential, ethical considerations, and the very definition of what it means to be human. One intriguing insight is how fictional portrayals act as a crucial testing ground for exploring the possible consequences, both positive and negative, of increasingly sophisticated AI, shaping public perception and research priorities. The book also delves into the semantic challenges inherent in defining and understanding artificial intelligence, addressing the ambiguities that arise when creating machines in our image. The book uniquely treats fiction not as mere entertainment but as a valuable source of insight into the societal and ethical implications of AI and robotics. The approach emphasizes the interplay between cultural consciousness and scientific advancement. Starting with the historical roots of AI in both science and fiction, it traces milestones in AI research alongside recurring themes in fictional works. Subsequent chapters focus on the challenges of imbuing AI with human-like qualities and the ethical implications of advanced AI, drawing parallels between fictional scenarios and real-world concerns like algorithmic bias and autonomous weapons. This comprehensive overview equips readers with critical thinking skills to navigate the complex world of AI.

String theory is one of the most profound and ambitious areas of modern physics, proposing that the fundamental building blocks of the universe are not point particles, as traditionally believed, but rather tiny, vibrating strings. These strings, though incredibly small, can exist in multiple forms, each corresponding to a different type of particle. String theory has the potential to unify the four known fundamental forces of nature—gravity, electromagnetism, the weak nuclear force, and the strong nuclear force—into a single, coherent framework. This vision of a unified theory of everything is one of the most exciting prospects in theoretical physics.
The roots of string theory date back to the late 1960s, when theoretical physicists began exploring the idea that the strong nuclear force, which binds quarks together in protons and neutrons, might be mediated by a one-dimensional object, a string, rather than a point-like particle. Initially, this idea was pursued primarily as a means of explaining certain aspects of quantum mechanics and particle interactions. However, as the theory evolved, it began to offer potential solutions to some of the most vexing problems in physics, including the unification of forces and the nature of gravity.
One of the key features of string theory is the concept of extra dimensions. In classical physics, we live in a universe of three spatial dimensions and one time dimension. However, string theory suggests that the universe may have many more dimensions, hidden from our everyday perception. These extra dimensions are compactified, meaning they are curled up so small that they are effectively invisible at macroscopic scales. The number of extra dimensions in string theory varies depending on the specific version of the theory, but the most popular form, known as superstring theory, suggests the existence of ten dimensions.

"Milo, the Magic Mudskipper" is an enchanting nursery rhyme that follows six-year-old siblings Charlie and Daphne on a magical underwater adventure. While crabbing at Mudeford Quay in Dorset, England, the children discover Milo, a talking mudskipper from Australia who has become lost after accidentally boarding a ship that carried him far from his mangrove home.
Milo possesses magical abilities that allow him to share his amphibious powers with the children, enabling them to breathe underwater and embark on a quest to Neptune's palace in the ocean depths. Their mission: to obtain a magical compass that will guide Milo safely home across the vast seas.
The trio faces three challenging trials in Neptune's underwater kingdom: the Riddle Deep, the Trial of Courage, and the Test of Heart. Through these adventures, they learn valuable lessons about friendship, bravery, and selflessness. When faced with choosing between helping Milo or a lost baby whale, they discover that true friendship means putting others' needs first.
Neptune, impressed by their noble hearts, rewards them with multiple magical compasses, ensuring both Milo and the whale can find their way home. The story concludes with Milo's joyful return to Australia and the establishment of a lasting friendship maintained through magical shells that allow the friends to communicate across the oceans.
Written in traditional nursery rhyme style with consistent AABB rhyme schemes, repetitive phrases, and musical rhythm, the tale emphasizes themes of friendship, courage, environmental awareness, and the magic that exists when we help others in need.
The opening music, is a lovely clear female vocal expressing the character of this nursery rhyme runs to nearly four minutes.
The appropriate background flutey music gives a happy atmosphere to the narration, and the closing music is an instrumental version of the same type of genre and instruments as the opening music and runs to about three minutes.

This book comes from two authors with scientific backgrounds. It recognises the huge advances made through science and their beneficial impact on society. However, it also expresses concern that the essentially tentative nature of scientific conclusions is being replaced by a growing tendency to accord to science the last word on a range of subjects. While the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic of 2020 has shown some of the uncertainties associated with scientific research, this book demonstrates that these become more apparent in such fundamental areas as the origin of both life and the universe, as well as the abiding mystery of mind and consciousness. The authors argue persuasively that we should recognise the limitations of science as well as its unquestionable strength.
David Galloway MD DSc was a Consultant Surgeon and is currently Honorary Professor of Surgery at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He was, until recently, the President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow.
Alastair Noble PhD spent most of his career in science education and educational management and was latterly the Field Officer for School Leaders Scotland. Both are committed Christians.
