Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864) was a critical figure in American literature, often associated with the Transcendental Movement yet markedly distinct in his exploration of darker themes. His heritage, marked by ancestry tied to the Puritanical roots of New England, provided a fertile ground for his fascination with guilt, the past, and moral ambiguity. Throughout his life, Hawthorne faced personal struggles, including economic hardships and the shadow of his family's legacy, which influenced his contemplative and sometimes melancholic writing style. For readers seeking to delve into the complexities of human nature and the moral quandaries that define our existence, this illustrated edition of Hawthorne'Äôs complete works serves as an essential resource. It invites aficionados of American literature, new readers, and scholars alike to engage deeply with Hawthorne's timeless explorations, leaving an indelible impression that resonates across generations.

William’s memoir, THE PARTS OF HIM I KEPT (Apprentice House. 2025), is an intimate account of a daughter’s coming of age in the face of her father’s schizophrenic unraveling. Williams investigates the limits of our medical and cultural understanding of schizophrenia while chronicling the shared burden and benefits of caring for a mentally ill family member. In the tradition of Ocean Vuong’s On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous and Robert Kolker’s Hidden Valley Road, this is one family’s story that asks us to consider the ways mental illness is as much a social issue as a biological condition and illuminates ways we find hope, and even thrive in the face of the extraordinary challenge of mental illness
